I'm sitting at the central courthouse for jury service right now, waiting to see if my name will get called. The weather sucks. It's rainy and foggy in downtown San Diego. Unfortunately, there are 2 trials that are considered long trials that for some reason I can't get myself bumped. I've gotten myself bumped every year but this year before I get thrown onto a jury panel. But I think my luck has run out and I'm going to be stuck on a jury panel, undergoing voir dire. I'll have to start smiling at the defendant and blowing kisses in their direction to get the prosecution to strike me.

I know, I shouldn't be complaining this time. But I'm in a mood for jury service this year. If I get selected, I'll be happy to be impartial and render a fair decision with my brethren. But right now, I'm just in a pissy mood.

If you have sex with someone involved in both cases you'll get off the hook.

Start with the judge and move down the ladder.

I recently went to "jury duty orientation." They put me on a panel, and I have to call a phone number every night after 5:00 until February 25th to see if I have to show up at the courthouse the next day.

Fun stuff.

I wish I could have been on phone stand-by. Would have made life a lot easier right now.

Currently, all the tables are taken so I'm sitting on the floor, in a skirt and boots, next to an outlet so I can keep charging my laptop. And my butt is numb.

Damn, and the courthouse wireless has LOTRO blocked so I can't download and at least play that game while I'm waiting for my name to get called.

Lunch break. And I got a big portion of bad Chinese food. How can you get so hungry by just sitting here? I ate fast and came back to the jury lounge so I could snag one of the chairs at the tables so I could sit properly. My butt is still smarting a bit.

Courthouse's wireless blocks you from all TV and videostreaming sites which blows. So I played around with that. Looks like you can go on Craigslist to search for roommates and jobs but you can't search for a casual encounter. You can get on Adult Friend Finder, but you can't get on Plentyoffish.com which I find very odd. Smiley: laugh

Ran into some court personnel, bailiffs and other attorneys that I know but I can't talk with them since I'm on jury service and it can pose a conflict right now.

I'm bored.

I have thus far survived being called onto a jury panel. Looks like there are 2 proceedings left. My butt is so numb from sitting.

I love jury duty!

Seriously. My company pays my full pay while I'm on jury duty, the courthouse is 10 minutes from my house.... what's not to love? Okay, the process of selection can be mind numbingly tedious, but once your involved in a case, be it criminal or civil, its fascinating.

The only time I've ever served on a jury and hated it, was service on a federal grand jury that met once a week in Brooklyn. It wouldn't have been so bad if the courthouse I had to go to wasn't physically as far away from my house as it could possibly be, and still remain on the same island. 65 miles one way is too bloody far to go for jury duty. I had to sit on that jury for almost two years. It sucked immensely.

But otherwise, all my jury service has been fun and easy.

I just called the jury reporty number for mine, and they didn't call my group number again. Only previous time I was called was back in college and they excused me because i was in arizona. I offered to fly back if they would fund the ticket though! Somehow, they didn't go for that. So still have a chance Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Actually kind of looking forward to seeing how the whole process works.

Deathwysh: a 2 year courtcase as a jury member? Seriously? Are you allowed to tell us about it? Not the jury room stuff, obviously, but the case itself?

I'm not sure how Australia's system is, but a federal grand jury in the U.S. is responsible for returning indictments for felonies, so he wouldn't have been following any specific case for the full two years.

Yeah, the federal grand jury, was a once a week deal. Each week we'd be presented with a number of indictments, most of which were people that had lied about a criminal record on their airport employment applications this was not long after 9/11 so they were actually checking up on airport employees) or illegal aliens that had already been convicted of a felon and then re-entered the country.

Only one of the cases was of any interest at all. It involved a pair of business partners that had a falling out, and one of them killed the other and dumped his body in a burned out car under the Brooklyn Bridge.

The process was really a joke. The grand jury indictment process is little more than a rubber stamp. I think I was the only one that every voted NOT to indict any of the accused. A good portion of the jury members didn't quite understand that they weren't there to "give the accused a chance to prove his innocence in court". Nor did they understand that they could actually question the witnesses themselves.

Ok, that does make it sound really bad. I would hope they'd at least provide chairs - hate the numb-bumm thing.

There were chairs but none near outlets so there were a number of us on the floor with laptops charging. When we were excused for lunch, I grabbed a very quick bite to eat and grabbed a spot at the tables next to an outlet. And I stayed there for the remainder of the day, despite the fact that I had to pee oh so very bad.
