So what does non-gambler do, while in Vegas for vacation?Follow

Looks like our vacation this year will be in Vegas from New Years Eve to Jan. 7 th. since Jonwin had the winning bid at fund raiser for the ship last weekend. for $600 he won us 7 nights in a The Polo Towers suite for up to 6 persons. We are inviting friends or family willing to help with some of the costs. Jonwin has place it on me to check out airfares, a task I dislike very much, but then don't think he would like the thought of driving there, during early winter.

It's been years since I been there on layover to San Diego or driving cross county. I'm not into big resort towns and other then driving to the Canyons or seeing the desert landscapes had no interest in seeing much more of the Vegas. Jonwin never been to the southwest deserts so I hope we can spend some time outside of the city. Otherwise I have no idea of what to do in Vegas, that doesn't mean putting up with casinos. shows or large crowds of tourists. Living in the DC area has sour me on big touristy crowds so much that I only go to National parks off season. Even when they aren't being stupid Americans tend to be noisy.

IF the ship goes into dry dock, we might be able to try to see at least one national park. I can get us a Golden Eagle Pass with proof of disability, and last year we had talked about going to a couple parks, while the ship is in dry dock. He's never been to the Grand Canyon which is my favorite of all the parks I been to so far.

Hotels are for staying at during conventions or when there isn't a good place to go camping nearby in my opinion. Jonwin is the gambler having worked at the racetracks as a money counter years ago. Neither of us can camp in wilderness areas like we used to, but anywhere I can take short walks or use a wheelchair seems to be okay, as long as I get some nature in and we both can visit a museum or two.

Go see the shows. I hope you like looking at boobs because 90% of the shows have semi naked women in them. I'd still go play cards or something. The thing is to have fun.

I was in Vegas when I was 5 months pregnant. I shopped, hung out by the pool, ate, hung out by the pool, drank non-alcoholic beers, hung out by the pool, watched TV in my room, slept, hung out by the pool, had a shotgun wedding, went home.

Awesome.

Yeah if it's still open, Star Trek: The Experience is definitely worth a look. It's a museum and an interactive ride and a few other things, including a live set version of Quark's Bar. Get a group to go with you and order their fishbowl drink, the Warp Core Breach.

According to Wiki it was closed down 2 years ago and all the stuff has been sold already.

Oddly enough, I got into that exhibit before it opened to the general public through a family connection.

I thought it was kind of stupid, but I've always been more a Star Wars guy.

Get your fat stores up for winter at the All-You-Can-Eat buffets.

As others mentioned, there are tons of shows, arcades, shopping plaza's, amusement rides, salons, etc etc. If I had my pick of shows I'd probably try and get to one of the Circ du'Soliels. There is a Madam Tussauds Wax Museum, horror houses, and more. If you can get a car and take a drive Hoover Dam is nearby, is cool to check out and has some nice scenery along the way.

I kind of enjoy just walking the strip at night - there's lots of stuff going on right on the street.

I want to go to Vegas just to see Penn and Teller. If we make it there and do nothing else the entire time, I'd be happy.

There is a portable exhibition:

which moves around various cities.

I don't know how it compares with ST:The Experience.

I stayed at the Polo Towers just a few months ago (or longer, I'm bad with time). Nice suites/villas. Although the damn AC in the second bedroom was super noisy and I'm a light sleeper, so that kinda sucked since it woke me up every time it kicked on. Almost right across the street is that newish set of hotels (can't remember the name, but it's like a whole huge complex thingie). There's some serious shops, art displays, neato waterfall wall thingie and other stuff which can occupy you for an afternoon. You're also right next to the MGM, and semi across the street from the NY/NY, Excalibur, Luxor set (roller coaster and entertainment, magic motion rides, etc). There are shops, shops, and more shops nearby.

I'd avoid the steakhouse with the fancy name right between the Tower and MGM though. Not unless you are from the Jophiel school of steak eating. Medium rare should not in any way be "crunchy". Sigh... There is a great restaurant in the aforementioned newish complex thingie across the street though. Don't remember the name (yeah. I'm helpful!), but it has interesting stacked sliced glass tube sections decor (and was pretty inexpensive relatively speaking). If you are interested in Steak and have some cash to spend, Stripsteak in the Mandalay is your best bet IMO. Don't miss the bleu Cheese potato slices! Mmmmm...

That's the stuff right next door, sorta (not the Mandalay, but that is seriously a good steak shop). You can always go check out the big Dam thingie within close driving distance. I'm sure there's tons of desert you can check out if you want as well. You could listen to someone try to sell you a timeshare! That's always fun...

And shows. Pretty much any type you want.

Thinking it over this morning, I am going to use up more leave and we will drive out and back. (Two of the four historic ships I work on are going into dry dock and I would be off anyway.)
Will try to budget our stay, maybe do one or two evenings out, sit by the pool, window shop,
see a show or two. Drive to Grand Canyon on our way home, do some camping perhaps on the south rim.
Still seeing which friends/family are able to come along.

See some shows, if something interests you. There is great food on the old strip, and off strip. Hoover dam. There are a few parks near by which are nice to visit.

Jonwin if we want to see pinball machines, there is a restaurant in the county that still keeps a room full of working machines including all the video games from the 70's and 80's.

gbaji there is desert and then there is taking time to actually look at them and seeing all the different colors.

Then most people only stay at the Grand Canyon long enough to look down and say that's nice.

Jonwin the North Rim will be closed, when we go. I never been able to visit the north rim, as we went in November back when Ruth was a baby* and then couple years later in March, thinking we wouldn't have another chance to go while still young. I also hope you like Blue Jays, not the little ones you see here out east, but ones that are big and will steal anything they take a liking too. Not as fun as watching the chickadees land on Jamie's Snurf sneakers, while waiting for her to drop crumbs. She was just way too cute back then. (facebook friends, she the one in my photos, that now has long black hair and is as lovely now, as she was cute back then)

*Word for the wise, when you are breast feeding, don't leave you kid with family, just so you can have 2 nights alone in a tent. It was like sleeping on two boulders, except for the leaking all over the sleeping bags.
