You know all those amazingly well preserved really old buildings and temples and statues (even the ones made out of ancient monumental wooden beams and stuff) all over the place? Well, if you get a chance, and no-one's looking, scratch away the surface layer with something like a lighter or a penknife. Most of them were made in the last 20 years or so out of concrete and then painted or otherwise camouflaged to make it look to tourists that all the genuine stuff wasn't demolished during the cultural revolution and replaced with square functional communist style concrete buildings.

You would never know that unless someone told you, because the Chinese are really bloody good at faking stuff.

Have a wicked time there though. fascinating place...Smiley: wink

I really like the photo of the statue, it has a very clear message of the great leader looking down on his people.
What kind of camera do you have, just your average point & shoot or a DSLR?

And I would try out some different points of view, for example shoot from much lower so you get the people standing in front of you in the photo too because from what I can see there's always people in front of you there.
Especially at the skyline photo it would've been cool to see all the people taking photos of the skyline on the photo as well. (kind of like what Martin Parr did at the tower of Pisa)
In general try to get things either completely in or out of view or cut them a good way in, (not) showing just the edge of someone's head distracts from the rest of the image. Also try to get as close to what you're photographing as possible. Closer is almost always better for photography.

Sorry, I kind of went and commented on your photos instead of what's on them... >.>

The shoreline photo looks a lot like Toronto, except futuristic. They even have the free standing ***** tower.

Wow. I did not know that. That actually kinda relates to something I was discussing with someone earlier, bolstering their point and undermining mine. You have given me pause, and food for thought. I thank you.

In many places, and I don't know enough about China to say, they don't regard it as a fake but as the same object/building that used to be there.

I'm glad that they fake it. It was a tragic loss to the world, the incredible amount of artifacts destroyed in the cultural revolution. Replication is worth the effort when the results are beautiful to the soul.

Stop at the Starbucks in the forbidden city if you have a chance to head that way.

If I start posting pictures of myself, how will I convince people in the OOT that I'm a chick?

A summary of my weekend Beijing visit, in haiku form:

Great Wall, Famous Square,
Forbidden City and bars.
Next time, less rain please.
