...I was just introduced-- verbally thank goodness --to the Afghan "alternative life style choice" of Man Love Thursdays. I had heard this bandied about infrequently, but thought it was just typical miltary gay bashing humor (Oh! The horrah!) brought about by two different cultures thrown together in uncomfortable circumstances. You know, where Middle Eastern men frequently hold hands in public, kiss each other on the cheek, stand very close to one another, that sort of thing.

But here in Afghanistan, the Pashtuns have a slightly different spin on the whole Islamic separation of the sexes thing. See, their Thursdays are like our Saturdays where you go out, raise a little hell, then head to the local mosque to beg Allah for forgiveness or whatever, maybe do a little head chopping off for a sacrifice or something.

Anyway, it is culturally acceptable for men to have sex with prepubescent boys and men up to the age of 29, which is when they become "men" as is considered the norm for them in terms of responsibilities and such. The guidleline is women are for reproduction, and boys are for fun. And it is usually done on Thursdays, hence the term "Man Love Thursday" where the joke goes, someone has to wear the dress-- the tradtional garb of a long shirt which extends down to the knees and loose pants underneath.

Like I said, I thought it was just fiction only to discover, no, homosexuality is rampant in Afghanistan, only to them it's not homosexuality because they aren't "men," just creatures with male organs and, apparently, pliable anuses. It's the whole in prison thing where dudes can cornhole some other dude but not be a **** because he was doing the deed, not taking it-- like THAT makes any sense. Only this is on a national scale.

Wow. Just... wow. Welcome to Islam, folks. That's the kind of perversity you get when you do the whole Muhammhed thing I guess.

No if, its true. Getting deployed to be a cage kicker tends to suck. The smell of Pine-sole and **** tends to get traumatizing after nine months. Thank whatever deity is popular this week for not having to do a second deployment of that.

Sadly, every word of it is true. No ********* But hey, if you haven't heard of the term before and if you're gay you can use it at your next fudge packing party and tell your buddies you're supporting the troops in Afghanistan by wearing the dress.

Work with me here, folks. I'm trying hard to be sensitive to your... gayness. If DADT does manage to get, ummm... shoved up our a$$es, doing a tour in A-stan will be a veritable vacation to Hedonism Resorts, Middle East franchise. You'll fit right in!

Bard, I'm telling it to you troll-free, Man Love Thursday is a bonafide fact here in A-stan. No joke. And the sexual use of boys from 5 years old to 28 year old men by older men is reality.

Obviously you have just heard of this for the first time-- not suprising to me, seeing as I have been involved in the military for decades, traveled around the globe all my life, and am extensively steeped in cultural sensitivity despite what you may assume, and I had never heard of this before. Oh, I'd heard stories about Arabs buggering boys, but had always thought it was the anti-Arab bias of the teller. However, this is religously and culturally acceptable here.

Still think that no culture is superior to others?

On the other hand, I have purchased some exquisite sapphires of several colors and varieties for literally pocket change. That is in Afghanistan's favor. I just bought a fiery 4.35 ct orange sapphire, a 5.5 ct flawless deep blue sapphire, and a couple dozen star saphs for less than $15 each. Add to that an assortment of garnets, a couple of small rubies, and a variety of tourmaline (the watermelon kind is my favorite, natch) for my poodle back home.

Seriously unbelievable prices if you know where to go and how to haggle.

Oh, and just picked up a 40 year old silk Persian rug the other day too, but I paid $1900 for it.

I love bargains.

Hey, I keep trying to tell you I'm a pretty sensitive guy, Bard. Maybe a few interior design classes, a salsa dance class, and some new fabulous jewels will make me appreciate the more limp wristed side of masculinity better. I'm giving it my best shot. Just not my best money shot. Yet.

Back in the 80s the Russkies made a big PR noise about this - propaganda mana from heaven. Photos and accounts of men wearing lipstick & nail varnish and walking hand-in-hand around Kandahar.

There's also a good account of it in John Simpson's recent memoirs of being a BBC war correspondent there.

Umm, I dunno about you, but 28 year old men don't qualify as victims of pedophilia or pedastry in my book. We're talking about a 23 year span of buggering, rogering, and pelvic thrusts here. I suppose if you are inclined to that flavor, that's a cornholeicopia of a$$ flesh to choose from. I mean, 5 year olds to 28 year old chocolate starfish-- there is something there for the discriminating homosexual. And it's just a cultural difference, right? We can't be placing our Western/American morals and Christian values on other non-MTVed nations.

Diversity! I loves it!

If it's true, the part involving minors bothers me.

The rest is just stupid, in my opinion, but I'm just one of those nasty gay monogamists.

It's true. And it kind of puts the whole all-cultures-are-equal-thing in a fresh perspective, doesn't it? Mind you, this is not something localized, but is a cross-border issue rife inthis region of the world.

And, while I haven't been able to confirm this by any means, in the more remote regions incestual pedophiliac homosexuality is supposedly routinely practiced. Now that covers just about all the bases, doesn't it? And after flying over these areas, I can easily imagine most, if not all of these remote villages haven't seen an outsider for generations.

As far as the children aspect goes, I have no problem saying it's wrong, perverse, bad, whatever. I'm not sure what your actual point is though aside from trying to get a rise out of people. Afghani Pashtuns are bad people and we should ahve left them under the Taliban?

Wait! Are you saying that Western Christian types don't bugger little boys (and girls) on a monotonously regular basis? And havn't done throughout history?

I suppose though, that its yet another thing that people can use to justify to themselves why these savages need to 'liberated' and taught the correct way to live even if it means that they must be occupied, imprisoned and bombed.

Totem speaks the truth.

I'm ok with it, assuming consent. Most cultures have had something similar at one point or another. Plus, they probably need something to do while the sheik is monopolizing the womenfolk in his harem.

Maybe they were, but probably not.

It more that what passes for quality, colour, cut, etc in Afghanistan may not turn out to be the fine investment it looked like when you get it home to the west where tastes are different.

If you buy them for yourself, then all good. If you buy them for resale when you get home...good luck with that.
