Like the other 10% unemployed people out there who are actually still seeking jobs (and so far have been unable to find them), I was thrilled to be called into a first round interview tomorrow.
The conservatives on the forum seem to think that getting a job is as easy as it is in the Sims - you just open the paper, or look on the computer, and choose the career track you want - and start the next day. Those of us who live in reality, however, know it's never that easy.
I've been out of the workforce over a year.
Any tips for a jobseeker so I don't ***** this one up?

Largely depends on what sort of work you're looking for. One thing, if you have been out of the work force for a while (or are just entering it): it may be worth your while to get some help dressing up your resume.
Make it clear that you're willing to start at the bottom but that you intend to work your way up.

Start a job placement agency and get people to pay you money for you to help them find jobs.

Scope out the place before you go in for your interview. When you go for the interview, wear a nice, but not over-nice, version of what everyone else is wearing.
Most importantly, read a copy of The Definitive Book of Body Language, by Barbara and Allan Pease. I cannot stress how much this helped me interview well, and garner much praise from prospective employees, back in the last recession when jobs were rare as hens teeth, especially in my age class.

You weren't alone in this situation. I was out of work for over a year before I found a job. I suggest using all the state and goverment help that is offered. I ended up getting my job through the State workforce agency. I still laugh that of the large group of people I was going to the the "Find a Job" Training. I was the only one that showed up for the job fair that ended up getting me the current job I have. Agencys like the one I used often have employeers and jobs they try to match you up with. The other thing to say is to keep beating on the doors and handing out the resume's
Something that turns me right off to a potential employee in an interview is when they don't answer my questions. They give me some pre-canned answer that doesn't really fit.
Take a sec or two to actually absorb the questions put to you, and answer them carefully. If it seems the questions are on sheet of paper that is distributed to the interview panel, ask if you can have a copy. Or ask before the interview starts if the questions are available.
Don't talk about personal stuff. Don't make excuses for short-comings (because remember as a potential employee you don't have any). Be concise, confident and polite.

I've decided to be honest about my reasons for not working - I applied for graduate school, due to various circumstances was not accepted, then wrote a book, but haven't yet found a publisher. At this point, I don't need to work so much as I want to work - the year I had off as a good time to rethink my priorities and decide what I really want to do.

PC tech support. Starting part time, with the option to move into full time once I complete all my basic certs (which they will pay for if I agree to stay for a year).
I don't want to go into it too much since I learned the hard way last time to separate my work life and my online social life, but in this particular case, me saying I was the leader of an MMO guild was a positive. The HR manager plays WoW...

Congrats! Having also just recently found full-time work again, I can say it's tedious at best not working and trying to in this economy.
