El Museo del Barrio and the New York Historical Society are collaborating on the exhibit Nueva York. The show predicts the US will be Spanish speaking by the end of the century.

Quote:
The show, Nueva York (1613-1945), smashes a lot of preconceptions and makes some pretty shocking predictions — the most notable of which is, Get ready, America, because you're going to be a Spanish-speaking nation.

Filmmaker Ric Burns, who has made a half-hour documentary for the exhibit, says that’s because the current Spanish-speaking wave of immigration is expected to last about 150 years — while the peak of the European wave of immigration lasted only about 40 years.

"Sometime in 2060 or 2070, the United States in general will be more Latino heritage than Anglo heritage or non-Latino heritage," Burns says. "And before the end of the 21st century, the United States will be the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world.

Do you speak Spanish?
Yes, I'm fluent :4 (5.9%)
Some what:26 (38.2%)
No:34 (50.0%)
I don't speak Spanish but my wife does:4 (5.9%)
Total:68

I said fluent, but I lied. I could speak almost fluently back in college, but I haven't spoken Spanish as a main language since early 2006. My skills kinda suck now.

Languages are NOT like bike-riding. I was fairly fluent in German back in my school-age days, but it's all gone.

I was hoping the world would all go lolinternetz language.

I voted 'somewhat'.

After having spent about 6 months in Central America I became fluent enough in several different versions of spanish to understand what people were trying to say to me. Such as "¿quieres comprar mi hermana? Ella es una virgen ... con mucha experiencia" and "Hey gringo, que quiere comprar la cocaÃna", and other important stuff.

I don't know if I buy into the premise of the OP. Other studies have found that immigrants (and especially their descendants) are picking up English faster than previous immigrant groups due to the pervasiveness of American culture. The "three generation" rule is getting trimmed down as children of Hispanic immigrants are learning English and intermarrying with people who speak English as their primary language.

I'd need to see more movement towards being able to progress as far in the US speaking Spanish as you can speaking English before I could put much stock into Spanish becoming the majority language.

Well, it needs a first official language first.

I only know how to say "I do not speak ________. I speak English; I am a stupid American" in three languages.

Oh, and my father taught me the basics of international travel: How to say "Two beers, please" in half a dozen languages.

When I was with my Argentinian ex, her family spoke very little English and I studied on my own. Knowing French helps a lot as well for words I don't know. I could pick it up quickly if I used it every day.

1) Why'd Angsty have to go and ruin his forum name?

2) In fifty years, the official language of America will be Chinese.
