It's always sad to hear about someone losing their life at a young age. In the case of this Rutger freshman Tyler Clementi, the tragedy is sparking controversy as to whether there should be a law against bullying/harassment. I'm of a the belief we have far too many laws governing our lives already. Many schools already have some form of anti-harassment protocol in place. The simple truth of the Tyler Clementi case is he never gave the school any chance to resolve this issue prior to committing suicide. If anything, society's lack of acceptance in general for gays is what ultimately led to his death, not the invasion of privacy itself. So as a country, we should be careful what extremes to pursue in the effort to change the laws.
As a kid growing up, I wasn't the biggest or the most athletic kid on the block. I was your normal average kid with more in common with Peter Parker(pre-spider bite) than the jocks. I know how it can feel to be harassed about who your friends are, your clothes, your looks, and anything else that is different. Yet, I don't have as much sympathy for this kid as most people seem to feel for him. I know life can suck when people make fun of you or call you names based on your lifestyle. You don't even have to be gay to be harassed by your peers who might perceive you to be gay just because you are timid around the opposite sex.
Now we have U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg trying to call into play new legislation blowing this issue up much more than it needs be done. Nobody will argue what happened wasn't a tragedy, however it's nothing that should require a new law to contain the problem. As another person mentioned in the comments, what have we done all this time without a law in place? I'm a firm believer that giving our government any more power than they have now no matter how good the intention will result in fewer liberties. The Patriot Act is by far the worst bill to ever be passed in the entire history of the USA. We must really stop letting others dictate what is a problem and learn to solve most problems on our own. I'm not for anyone to be harassed, but there has to be another way. Tolerance for those that are different should be the focus, not more laws.
