You were doing it wrong, then.

And damnit, now I want one.

Lol... I was exaggerating. But it was a monster. It was like a 6 foot diameter 1.5 inch thick circular granite tabletop. It rested on top of some super thick base thingie (with just gravity holding it in place, cause it didn't really need anything else). The base was heavy as hell. The table top was insane. I think we ended out rolling it, which I'm sure chipped the hell out of the edges, but what were we supposed to do? The thing easily weighed 500-600 pounds, and the foot destruction potential of trying to carry it sideways through a doorway wasn't something I wanted to contemplate.

Definitely not renters furniture.

See, that's almost the right way to do it.

You just forgot to put something on the edge to protect it, like a layer of this stuff. (Then you just have to clean the adhesive off afterwards, which is easy enough.)

Had the person obtained such things, we would have used it. Or had the person even informed us helpers that this thing existed which needed to be moved, we might have gotten something to do this correctly. As it was, it was a few guys helping out on what should have been a quick load and move, with limited time, suddenly confronted with this thing. We did the best we could and wrapped it in a blanket, but I could literally hear the corners grinding and chipping as we rolled it.

Seriously. A good entry-level DSLR, even by one of the big two (Canon or Nikon) can be had for well under $1K these days.

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

And that's from BestBuy, which is overpriced as hell.

Those are pretty normal prices for those camera's, expensive items tend to be way more consistent across stores just because someone is going to go to more effort to find out what they should be paying. The real problem with both of those links is of course that they come with two lenses, which is a pain when you can get something like this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+-+18-200mm+f/3.5-5.6+Telephoto+Zoom+Lens+for+Select+Canon+Cameras/9065174.p?id=1218014505092&skuId=9065174 And then you start crying because even bundled the nice camera that started off affordable suddenly became more expensive, but now that you've started looking you can't go back and you have no money left now, Damn you Aethien.

Just look good at what lens you get, if you don't intend to photograph animals, airoplanes or other stuff that is far away you don't really need 200mm and an 17-50mm lens will probably work for you as well.
On the other hand, if you do really like those things (and bugs/macro photography) you might want to look at still getting a 17-50m but also buying a 70-300mm for the extra range.

Also, be happy that you don't want to go for concert photography. I got the cheapest solution zoom lens for that which cost me €340. The good lenses are 4-6 times that.
But I do use that lens for just about everything, 17-50mm does all I need as I prefer to get up close and use wide angles wherever possible.

Edit: Personally I would never go for a D5000, a good chunk of the price goes to the gimmicky screen that you won't have a use for more than once in a blue moon. The D90 is not much more expensive and simply better and with the D7000 almost here to replace the D90 the price for the D90 might even drop further.

Those are nikons right?

I'm going to go play with the lenses to try and decide if I want one 18-200 lens or a 18-55 and a zoom lens. The problem is that I've used 18-55 and have been frustrated by it's lack of flexibility.

The cameras I named are Nikons, yeah. Because Shador linked the D5000 and I think the D5000 is pretty pointless and gimmicky.
Nikon puts the D in front of whatever number they thought of and canon puts the D behind the number.

The great thing about having an 18-55mm is that if you want to zoom in you're going to have to get closer to your subject and that nearly always improves the quality of the photo, the risk you run when you have an 18-200mm is that you just turn the zoom to get closer instead of actually walking towards whatever you want to photograph.
To quote Robert Capa "If your photo isn't good, you weren't close enough".
Of course, if you want to photograph wildlife or airoplanes and such you simply won't be able to get closer so that's where you need the extra range.

The main difference between a zoomed in photo from afar or a photo taken from close up is that in the close up photo the relative difference in distance between things you have on your photo is larger which gives a depth to the photo. A zoomed in photo tends to look flat and thus also less interesting.

I bought a kitchen table made out of 100 year old recycled Turpentine wood which used to be part of the old Auckland wharf. I reckon it weighs at least 220Kg

It took 4 Samoans to lift it off the trailer and carry it into the house!

Luckily we probably don't need to move ever again, and if we do we have loads of Samoans.

Are Samoans your version of our Mexicans? Cheap illegal labor?

This whole learning thing is fantastic. I think I'm leaning towards the 18-200, but I'll definitely keep in mind your advice about being closer to what your shooting is better. For me the convenience of only having the one lens is very nice, especially if I'm doing backpacking or kyack trips where space and weight is limited and an SLR is already somewhat stretching it.

Samoans, like most Pacific Islanders, are huge, strong, relentlessly cheerful, and will carry heavy stuff about all day whilst listening to ukelele music and eating corned beef sandwiches and wearing only a grass skirt. Illegal? Maybe. But thats just a government label isn't it?

I don't remember any mexicans that were like that, but its difficult to judge because they are all covered up with great big sombreroes.

If you're planning on running around with your camera or backpacking/kyack trips and more of such things where the camera needs to be out of the way and easy to carry but nearby for any photo moments I strongly recommend spending time and money on finding a good backpack.*
I personally have a slingshot 200 at the moment which is ideal to go biking or such and I'm able to take my camera, flash and one or two lenses with me comfortably while also having space for lunch.
Although I'm looking at buying a larger backpack that can hold my macbook as well for school or more studio like environments where it pays to have my laptop nearby.

As for the learning, I can write up a lot more stuff that will help the quality of your photos if you're interested.
Also, if you don't have it yet, get Photoshop. Photoshop is the dark room for digital cameras.

Photoshop is also, like $900+, IIRC. Unless you're going pro, Photoshop Elements ($100) will do just fine.

Dollars yes, time as much. My Father has a really nice SLR bag that I've used a bit, and I quite like it. I was going to get the same or a similar bag from the local camera place I've been visiting. It is super convenient.

Just don't have my sister and brother-in-laws luck with Nikon bodies back when they were students. They lost one when their VW bus caught on fire in the middle of Lake Shore Drive and one or 2 more during robberies of their apartment.

Now days they seem to get by with a point and shoot, while my brother has job of taking family photos with his his professional camera that he needs for work.

Jonwin can't understand why I want a new digital camera, when I was given an old SLR for free. I've yet had a chance to double check the light meter on it. I dream of taking photos like a few of my friends post of my daughter at MD Ren Faire. Check out Bubble Fairies, My daughter is the one with long black hair dyed red at the roots.

In high school I got a Kalimar K-90 (which apparently is a knockoff of the Pentax P-1000 or something) used for about two years of random stuff and it hasn't had film in it for over ten years.
