I guess my biggest problem with this is someone thinking it's ok to tape someone else without their knowledge at an intimate moment like this. And to then also think it's ok to share that footage. I haven't really been thinking about the fact that the kid was gay and not out of the closet.
I do think it's incredibly sad that this kid killed himself, and the roommate should be punished for the violation of privacy. I don't think he should get a rep for murder or anything like that, but maybe some sort of harrassment charge.
Seems like two issues. Privacy rights and endemic suicide.
No, you shouldn't film people without their knowledge. Making the film publicly available is clearly illegal. Privacy laws, permissions, copyright law vs the internet are still in their infancy.
Teen suicide however, particularly homosexual teen suicide is a societal problem. It belongs to all of to do with what we choose.
