Charge them with invasion of privacy. Don't try to nail them worse than any other similar act of invasion of privacy because the guy decided to kill himself.

I agree with this, with one caveat. IF the roommate did this because his roommate was homosexual and with the idea of exploiting his sexuality, then it is a hate crime. He (and the girl, depending on her complicity/involvement) should be charged accordingly.

I think you don't believe in hate crime legislation, gbaji, but again, it's the law and it should be followed. Charge them for the laws they broke.

I tried to say that awhile back. I think you just said it a lot better and a lot more clear than I could have. To me since it happened not just once but twice, after he found out Tyler was gay leads me to believe that he did it again because he was gay.

It just makes the guy sound like a complete ******* and doesn't really help his case any.

I hate little sh*ts like this.

A twenty-year old douchebag with an unfortunately poor sense of humor, yes. Not a sadistic homophobe.

Eventually one may grow up and out of it.

edit: Not that I'm trying to defend or condone the douchebag, but young people in college often do stupid shit they think is funny; and sometimes it happens to someone who was unfortunately a bit unstable.

What the room-mate and his friend did was mean, cruel, but hardly more than a school-boy prank. They've been charged with invasion of privacy. Wonder how severe of a crime that is. The boy that killed himself obviously had troubles that ran deeper than an insensitive roomie and exposure of his sexuality.

He's also now a statistic. I dunno, maybe it's an obvious correlation, but fairly recent studies are supporting that homosexuality is a huge risk factor for suicide in teens.

Oh, yes, filming people having sex and putting it up on the internet is just a school boy prank, totally fucking harmless. And they're "roomies", of course - what a lovely little diminutive - so everything's candy hearts and fluffy bunnies, right? It's all just a little joke that some headcase took way too seriously, right? It's his fault he's dead, really.

Distributing it on the internet went too far. The term roomie was not intended to be diminutive. A kid killed himself. It's tragic. I can't really think of any thing more tragic than a young person somehow reaching a point where suicide is their only answer. It's hardly candy hearts and fluffy bunnies - your words not mine.

Chiming in with the "at big colleges, cliques no longer matter."

Hell, in my town, every clique type place has its own bar. My preferred bar, The Globe, is also known as "the grad bar" since it's where graduate students and professors go hang out for drinks.

I joined up with my club, hung out with friends, and avoided interacting with 99% of the rest of campus, including all of Greek row.

So "prank", "school-boy" and "roomie" aren't meant to play down the severity of the perp's crime? Well, fair enough; you must just be the world's worst communicator.

I've not a clue where you're going with this.

I'm not gonna argue with you about who's fault this suicide was. Clearly, the kid took his own life. Pin it on the actions of other's if you'd like, but's it's epidemic. We're all responsible.

That's awesome.

I guess my biggest problem with this is someone thinking it's ok to tape someone else without their knowledge at an intimate moment like this. And to then also think it's ok to share that footage. I haven't really been thinking about the fact that the kid was gay and not out of the closet.

I do think it's incredibly sad that this kid killed himself, and the roommate should be punished for the violation of privacy. I don't think he should get a rep for murder or anything like that, but maybe some sort of harrassment charge.

Seems like two issues. Privacy rights and endemic suicide.

No, you shouldn't film people without their knowledge. Making the film publicly available is clearly illegal. Privacy laws, permissions, copyright law vs the internet are still in their infancy.

Teen suicide however, particularly homosexual teen suicide is a societal problem. It belongs to all of to do with what we choose.

The case is being probed as a hate crime source. Which I agree they should at least be looking into. If it is considered a hate crime then it raises the maximum sentence from 5 years to 10 years in jail.
