Eight little red-handed Democrat piggies, gobbling up the taxes of the poor.

Quote:
The mayor and former city manager of Bell were led away in handcuffs Tuesday, charged with six other officials with taking more than $5.5 million from the working-class suburb in a scandal that triggered nationwide outrage and calls for more transparency in government.

Former City Manager Robert Rizzo, Mayor Oscar Hernandez and the other current and former city officials were rounded up during morning raids on their homes that prompted many of their neighbors to burst into cheers.

They were charged with dozens of counts of illegally paying themselves huge salaries in what District Attorney Steve Cooley called a case of "corruption on steroids."

"They used the tax dollars collected from the hardworking citizens of Bell as their own piggy bank, which they then looted at will," Cooley told a news conference as he stood next to photos of the eight suspects.

In Bell, where one in six residents lives in poverty, people began honking their horns at the news of the arrests.

Personally I hope they all choke on it.

Good for the arrests but... where on earth is "Bell"? This may explain why I heard nothing about it.

the suspects were last seen being driven in an armoured Limo thru the main gate of Halliburton Worldwide, who have offices in the area.

Sounds a lot like somewhere in the Middle East to me....

I'm more surprised no one has mentioned this yet: Jesse Jackson Jr implicated in trying to buy Illinois senate seat.

Even comes with a sub-story about a female "social acquaintance" in the form of Giovana Huidobro.

I'd heard a few stories about Bell on NPR in the past few months.

Apparently Frank Rizzo had a brother; who knew?!

It is within Los Angeles. It is about 4 miles south-east of downtown. North of Compton and Lynwood.

Folks in Southern California have been talking about it as well. I assumed it was more of a regional thing, so didn't bother mentioning it. I also didn't assume any particular political affiliation was involved (still not sure really). Just figured it was some small town where the folks in power decided to take a bit larger share than they should. It is kinda amusing to read the salaries they were being paid though. Makes you wonder what world they thought they were living in.

I hadn't heard that actual charges were filed though. I wasn't sure they could since the salaries were presumably "legal" in the sense that they were approved by the city council or whomever does such things. I suppose they found some corruption charge to get them on though. Good for the townsfolk, I guess.

Jesse Jacksons family has been doing this sort of thing for 30yrs. Like I said what's the story?

I thought we were supposed to be outraged at it all the time, not just "oh, it just happened for the first time".

I had heard about it awhile ago. Just heard yesterday that the perps have been arrested. There is a bright side, from yesterday's story, it sounds like the townsfolk have developed an interest in their local government that was lacking previously.

Too bad though it went on as long as it did. It's kind of sad that the whole town council must have all agreed to participate in the greed-orgy to some extent.

Apparently one of them wasn't in on it, and didn't understand why all his fellow councilmen were all driving Bentleys when he had to make do with a Hyundai.

It is if you're referring to the actual bad acts. It's a national issue in terms of other reigions reporting it as a story along the lines of "fuck, we knew Southern California voters were stupid, but WOW!!"
