I sold my Warhammer account this weekend. I got about $250.00 dollars for it. According to fellow War players, I could have held out for twice that, but I just wanted it out of temptations range. The tainted money is going towards our tattoos (see earlier thread).

I used Player Auctions. It was quite easy. It all felt legit and relatively safe.

I scoured some of the other auctions. There was an EQ duel-boxing account set-up (2 accounts) that the seller was asking 5 grand for. It had 5 maxed out characters (the cap for EQ is now 85 btw). I can't imagine anyone paying that kind of money, but who knows.

Currency selling is advertised and done in-game these days with little consequence to the buyer or seller if the transgression is reported.

The game companies, unable to staunch the bleed of gaming money going out to third-party farming companies, responded by selling the stuff themselves.

So, have attitudes changed around here? Despite selling a gaming account, I'm still all for upholding the EULA's that most games come with (selling my account is not technically against War's EULA according to the game dev I talked to). Zam is kind of owned now by a company that kind of made it's mark on the gaming world by illicitly selling gaming stuff.

I hate to think peeps are messing up the enjoyability of their own game by supporting sales of gold and items but maybe their enjoyment really is enhanced by spending an extra fifteen bucks for 100 gold pieces.

Anyways, virtual sales are now their own economy. Virtual worlds like Gaia and Second Life have e-malls where you can spend real money. Famous personalities are not only putting their names on t-shirts and tennis shoes, but on virtual goods as well. You might not be able to afford that 46" High Def tv in real life, but maybe you can afford the top-of-line Golden Winged Pegasus that your virtual self can ride on in your virtual world. Is the e-horse less satisfying than the real TV?

Make-believe worlds are getting pretty crazy. I'm retreating back to the real one.

What does the title of this topic mean?

Eh, I don't think I'd sell any of my accounts. Considering I only have 2 (FFXI and WoW), and neither are likely worth that much, and I'll probably still play WoW when the expansion comes out, it doesn't seem worth it to me.

That being said, I've gone through a variety of stages. I hated RMT back in the hey-day of FFXI because it raised prices to the point where you had to buy gil or spend obscene amounts of time to get gear. However, I think WoW proved to me that it was more of the fault of the game than the RMT action. The best items in WoW can't be bought (unless you buy accounts). And even if you do buy the accounts, your actions don't affect me at all.

I can see why people would be upset, but in the end I just think, eh, it's a game.

Long story short, I've become a lot more laid back about it in my old(er) age than my fiery teenage years.

As long as the action isn't against the EULA, I have no real problem with it. That being said, as far as MMO gaming goes, the journey{leveling to cap} to me, is far more important than the destination{reaching the cap}. I will never buy gold, items, or accounts.

I thought the title "I Sold My Game Account" might draw unwanted attention.

I've made the argument in the past that gold-farming screws up the in-game currency of a game. I still believe that to be true, but less impacting since most game-companies have their own stores to buy in-game stuff. Selling accounts, rather than letting them fade away (and leave the game world) probably has some impact on the over-all game as well - making it top heavy. Not to mention it allows someone to jump in with a character they don't yet know how to drive.

Warhammer, for those that don't know, is pretty much all pvp - no one plays it to fight against a cg monster - they play to fight other players, so stats are everything (yours compared to your opponents anyways), also the max rank takes some work to attain. Seldom do ranked out characters go away. Accounts are traded, bought and sold and frequently just given over to a guild, or friends where it becomes shared property.

Anyway, it was hard. I sat and stared at the 'complete transaction' button for the longest time. It wasn't because my actions were verging on unethical, it was because it was my stuff, my time, my names, my gear, my e-power. Though I knew I was done playing War, I wanted to hold on to something. Once I finally did it, it was like "oh, no big-deal".

The problem with RMT is that once the copper in your gnome's vault is worth dollars people have far more incentive to steal it. I don't give a fUck about the impact it has on some virtual economy, I just don't want the security of my video game box compromised.

Someone needs to start selling virtual insurance.

Just as a note, we're no longer owned by said company. We are an independent entity. :)

You lost the moral high ground somewhere in between those two points where you weren't owned by one of the largest RMT enterprises in the world.

I'm only levelling toons to sell 'em for heroin money.

But only organic, fair-trade heroin, 'cause I'm ethical and stuff.

Although I have been warned that heroin can be a bit more-ish.

My Sorc was hot. She was worth a cool mill.

I was dumbfounded by the pair of EQ accounts for 5k.

Really the game is iffy right now, but does fill a niche that no one else offers up. I had lots of interest in my account. Two other buyers lined up if the one should have fell through. But maybe I'm talking too much.

Mine hasn't. I'm not going to pretend you're some super terrible person, but you have contributed to breaking the game. The entire point of a game is that you have play independent of any outside factors. Monopoly where you can use real cash isn't a game worth playing. It's not any better or worse than hacking or scamming the equivalent.

When I quit FFXI, I just let my character go into stasis. I didn't give away my crap or try to sell the account. Admittedly, it wasn't that great an account, but I'd have gotten a couple hundred bucks out of it I'm sure, but the biggest thing that stopped me from selling it was that I had lived through the worst of the RMT deathgrip on FFXI.

I don't know if any of you know what I'm talking about or even care, but to expand on that, there was a good long stretch of time if the game where the RMT owned everything. It was nigh impossible to do anything NM, crafting, or farming related. In short, It sucked. Then came the Hyperinflation from all the currency they were selling because they had the market locked down so well. In short, that SUCKED. I really don't want to give any business to the RMT companies that broker the deals for accounts. Also, I'm attached to my character, which I realize is stupid, but I really don't want somebody to strip it down and use it for whatever.

I don't care what other people do with their characters though, it's a waste to get all righteous about it.

I don't buy/sell because I'm not really invested enough to do so. And I play a MMORPG where, frankly, if you can't make millions of in game currency yourself and buy what you need then you're some sort of mongloid half-wit.

By in large though, I've stopped caring because the game companies don't really care. A few token efforts to stop 3rd party RMT folks while all opening their own "cash stores" to rake in profit on the same thing they supposedly condemn. They don't care about people buying and selling for cash, they just don't like not turning a profit on it.

I'm also of the persuasion of not giving half a rat's ***. Although, I've never sold an account or in-game currency; not for any ideological reason, just because I'm too lazy to bother with such a thing.

I don't think it's stupid to be attached to your character, I was attached to all of mine that I levelled up any distance. In an MMO you spend so much time with them, and they are intersected with by other people as your online face for so long, that your avvie is like anther physical feature of your body. Sort of like a tattoo or something.

I haven't played in something like two months, and the desire to go back isn't all that strong. And I have little time, because of work and Thom.

Maybe. Warhammer, much more so than any other game I've played, the characters are valuable for their ability to pawn other peeps. Like I said, the game doesn't disallow account selling or trading. It's common place and discussed openly - though actual advertising to buy or sell accounts on the official forums isn't allowed (you can openly solicit others to babysit your characters, run them through pve content, try them out or whatever). I'd be happy to know my Sorc was still out there melting-face, even if not by my hand.

I heard a story on the radio, awhile ago now, but after selling my War account, it came back to me and piqued my interest. The story was about one of the famous rap-stars (I don't remember which) and all the money he was making through branded virtual items that were sold for real cash for use in Second Life, Gaia and a couple e-other worlds I'd not heard of. I guess I didn't realize the extent or the value we've come to place on virtual stuff. It seems strange.
