Going to DC this weekendFollow

#1 Sep 17 2010 at 12:44 PM Rating: Good
So I'm taking my guy friend to DC this weekend. He has never been so we got a hotel room for Saturday night and plan to do the "Touristy" things. Visit the monuments, Museums, things of that nature. I wanted to ask around to see if anyone has any other ideas on what to do while in DC that may be "Off the beaten track".

Thanks.

Well, hit all the Smithsonian Museums...the Natural History museum is pretty great...and they're all free admittance (your tax payer dollars). Smash, Hannah, and I were there a few weeks ago and had a low-key dinner at Busboys and Poets (I guess they have a couple locations) but the food and atmosphere (at least for dirty hippy liberals) was great. Hannah was a fan of the peanut butter and banana panini.

Have fun!

Check out Old Town in Alexandria, it's a pretty little area, with some great restaurants. My sister is doing an internship at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in DC, she's spent the majority of her extra time with friends in the shops along the waterfront there.

You should check out that place, too. Very educational.

Also, a little further out than Alexandria, but Manassas (where I used to live) has the Civil War battlefields and whatnot.

Even better: Take a boat across the Potomac to old town Alexandria. You get a fabulous view of the monuments from the river.

A weekend won't be enough, I promise. Smiley: lol My husband and I spent a week there, and we still didn't get to do all we wanted to do.

The air and space museum is awesome. The memorials are pretty awesome. And You've got to see the Lincoln Memorial.

Of course, since it's Saturday evening now, I'm probably too late to give my two cents. Smiley: grin

If you need a place to eat you need to check this place out Nando's Peri Peri It's a Portuguese chicken restaurant and it's very very good. I recently visited my sister who lives there. So we went to a lot of different non American places to eat some of which were pretty good.

The museums were all pretty cool. The air and space one has an Imax. I liked the art and sculpture one the best. Probably because much of it was outside, garden style, and it was very uncrowded as compared to the others.

The memorials are nice. The changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier over at Arlington was kinda cool to watch. My favorite place of all was the Library of Congress.

Oh and Ford's Theatre is still an active show-house - catch a play.

Wow... What a busy weekend. I think we walked 20miles.

Walked from Hotel to the Capital, then all the way down the mall to the Castle, Over to the American History Museum, Then over to the Lincoln Memorial. Watched the Sunset over the Washington Monument. We were so tired by then that we took a cab back to the hotel. Changed, Then went to Georgetown for dinner and walking around the shops. Sunday we took the metro back to the Smithsonian were we did the Air and Space and the Natural History Museums. On the way back to get the Car we stopped at this little Irish place for some Fish and Chips and some Shepherds pie. It was the best meal I think we had there.

We had a wonderful time and were able to see most of the things we wanted too. I'm so damn tired today, I'm glad I took the day off.

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas!

Next time we go down there will be no car because parking was crazy and we will go see Mt Vernon and the Changing of the Guard.

If that little Irish place was called the Irish Times, it has been around for years, and is no secret to those who know the District. It could also have been the Dubliner which is next door to it, and has been around even longer. (37 year or so for the IT to 45plus.)
Go to the Hoover building and take the FBI tour to see an exhibit about the top ten killer my dad arrested.
Take another day for the Native American museum and the Holocaust museum. Travel out toward Dulles to see even more airplanes at the Smithsonian annex.
