Smiley: lol

How many times have you been told that what you say doesn't apply to the real world? Be honest, now.

In physics, the real world works exactly like the formulas say it does 99% of the time. And then 1% of the time it doesn't, instead of throwing a temper tantrum about it, the physicists get really excited and hold a bunch of conferences and come up with lots of wacky and fun new ideas.

In other disciplines, the real world often works like experts predict, but because people dismiss the words of the experts outright, they retroactively complain that no one could predict stuff was going to happen.

"Those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it" was true when it was coined and it's true today.

Where exactly did anybody claim that the GOP were responsible for the sub-prime collapse? I'm pretty sure "Wall Street" and "Fat Cat Bankers" have been taking most of the blame for that one.

Edit: Also, I didn't realize that Jophiel was in the sub-prime mortgage industry, him giving all those loans to unemployed people.

Man Joph, I think you struck a chord. I haven't seen varus rant that much in quite a while - usually it's unwitty and displaced one-liners.

I missed this piece of history. So, Varus presumably got a degree in education, dropped out as a teacher, and took a place at his dad's insurance company? Huh. What a nifty new wrinkle. I think we need to rephrase the "Those who can't do, teach; those who can't teach, teach gym sell insurance.

Like Nathan Deal, Republican candidate for governor in GA! (Yes, taxpayers are going to foot his bill if he declares bankruptcy. The failed business venture caused the bank that made the loan to fail and be taken over by the FDIC.)

Hahahahah... that was awesome. Who knew that Varus's abject failure as a teacher still ate at him like that?

Of course, having seen him talk about history it's no wonder that he couldn't hack teaching and had to slink off with his tail between his legs.

Close...4 years for a degree in history with a philosophy minor. 2yrs earning my masters in education. Taught a year and couldn't stand it. Worked for myself for a couple more years in lawncare and wood work/along with the garden of course. My father and I went in together to start another insurance agency (growing up I helped him set all those offices up for room and board). He retired having owned 15 agencies and 45 employees in tx. This current agency was a scratch one and he's since been paid for his expertise and monetary backing. H*ll he's not been near an insurance agency in 3yrs.

This was probably the least offensive and most informative post I've seen you write. Thumbs up, man.

Did you do student teaching before getting your masters? Seems a shame to invest all those years and then end up hating something.

No offense, but then what did you intend to do with a degree in history?

And I only really wasted 2yrs and 35k so no reason to be bitter right?

Hey, whatever you want to tell yourself to cope with your failures is your business. I'd probably "hate" the system too if I couldn't hack it and had to walk away a quitter.

You think that Virginia is in South America? Of course you also thought Mexico shared a border with Columbia.

Wow, no wonder you failed out of being a teacher.

Joph,

Isn't that what you did? I mean how many people are so pathetic they need to actually leave the country to find some poor disadvantaged foreigner to f*ck them?

Well, wouldn't the real quitters pick up one of the illegals in our own country instead? I mean, at least going abroad takes planning and cash... going to the other side of town doesn't seem quite as difficult.

But the government probably shouldn't be underwriting (read: guaranteeing) sub-prime mortgages in order to artificially increase the rates of home ownership, as recent history would suggest.

Yup. Which is exactly what I meant by "Sub-prime lending will take care of itself if there *isn't* a government hand in there trying to build social good-will by helping poor people buy houses." I think part of the confusion is that the term "regulation" gets used for different things. If it's actually "regulating" the industry (ie: making it work better, preventing fraud, setting standards, etc), that's fine. But when it's being used to manipulate the industry to produce a social outcome, it's almost always going to end badly.

EDIT! That's what I get for not reading the rest of the damn thread! You guys have the attention spans of like people with really short attention spans.
