The $60B deal with the Saudis just more or less went public.

Leno had a one-liner about this last night, and the first thought to come to my head was, "why the fuck am I watching Leno?"

The second thought was "Jon Stewart will get a few cheap laughs out of this in 15 years when we have tens of thousands of troops there."

Except all those jobs created will go to illegal Canadians.

More like "the guy who gives us cheap oil is my friend". They're not really the enemy of our enemy. The whole branch of Islam which terrorists follow was imported form Saudi Arabia. And its expansion through-out the globe, but especially in really poor places like Pakistan and Afghanistan, was funded by Saudi Arabia. And it still is today.

There's a reason I said "my enemy of my other enemy," as opposed to "the enemy of my enemy."

I expect the Israelis will be in line for the next shipment.

Israel's already been promised the next generation F-35 fighters when Saudi Arabia gets their F-15s.

Back in... 2007?... the US struck an arms deal with S. Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and some other nations to the tune of $30ish billion over ten years (the deal in the OP is also over 5-10 years). I only find it odd because at that time the lion's share went to Egypt and Saudi Arabia was partner for only two or three billion dollars.

Fair? How much have the Israelis gotten from us in the past thirty years or so?

Talks are also underway to expand Saudi Arabia's ballistic-missile defenses. The U.S. is encouraging the Saudis to buy systems known as THAAD—Terminal High Altitude Defense—and to upgrade its Patriot missiles to reduce the threat from Iranian rockets. U.S. officials said it was unclear how much this package would be worth.

Well, no-one can object to this, at least, unless they find the idea of the US scamming Saudi Arabia out of her hard-pumped money somehow offensive.

Also, the Saudi military already has better fighter jets than the F-15.

Yeah, we should totally just invade and occupy them instead.

I'm not huge into US politics, so correct me if I'm wrong... but didn't Reagan do something similar?
It seems to me the US is in the game of arming a country then bombing them and rearming them.

I'm sorta ok with this. If the Saudi's are gonna buy arms, I'd prefer them to buy our arms.

Keeps the "defense" engineers I know from Falling Down, if nothing else.
