The Associated Press wrote:
PARIS—France's Parliament banned the burqa, niqab and other full-body robes worn by some Muslim women, passing a law forbidding people to conceal their faces in public.

The bill passed Tuesday after a final vote in the Senate, one of the French parliament's two chambers, and is scheduled to come into force after a six-month observation period. At parliament's request, the law will be reviewed by France's Constitutional Council before it is formally promulgated.

"Showing one's face is a question of dignity and equality in our republic," said Justice Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie during Tuesday's debate in the Senate.

I'm no fan of the burqa either, either as a symbol of submissiveness or a fasionable garment, but srsly, WTF France?

At least it's nice to know that other first world countries are just as xenophobic as we are over here.

Yeah, it's pretty disgraceful. And retarded. Retardedly disgraceful, in fact. That's what they get for voting Sarkozy at the last election. The guy came to power by courting the votes of the national front, people shouldn't be surprised if he comes out with national front policies.

Add to this the forced eviction of gypsies and Romas, some of whom are even sent back to Romania even though it's completely illegal under the free movement of individuals in the EU, and you have some pretty messed up policies. It can only mean one thing, really. The president's re-election campaign has started.

If they're going to ban covering faces in public, they better keep on top of any possible smog or flu epidemics.

Maybe he's just trying to distract everyone from how much they hate him for his plan to increase retirement age - kind of like feeding a dog your arm so he doesn't rip out your throat.
#8REDACTED, Posted: Sep 14 2010 at 3:58 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) France has actually seen what unlimited tolerance for radical muslims is doing to their country and this is the result; and it's just the beginning I might add.

Allegory,

I know for them to ban the burqa they'd have to be pretty upset with, or afraid of, the muslim population.

This is probably true. The ban was supported overwhelmingly by the country; something like more than 80% were for it.

It's an odd debate in a way. It's more government intervention in the lives of their citizens in the name of making people less repressed. I find it heavy-handed and too much big government, but hey, I'm not French so maybe that's cool over there. I defer to Red.

Yeah, it's partly that too. It's even more ridiculous since there only a few thousand people in France who wear the full face veil, and only a few hundreds that wear a burka, if that. Out of 70 million people...

And the worst thing is that it's solely aimed at the burkas. You can still wear a clown mask and walk down the street if you want.

TILT
The Muslim chicks who would normally wear a burka should just go around in blackface now. It'd kind of get the job done and France is down with racism so it's win-win!

France: Forcing dignity and equality on thier citizens, whether they want it or not!

Smiley: facepalm

I can understand saying you can't wear the burqa in any photos taken for ID purposes, but this is just silly.

Any signs of when France will ban minarets for being too Islamic?

This just shows how retarded it is.
I really don't get why you would do this anyway, what's the gain for the country?

Nah, only Americans seem to misunderstand that song.

Just because it's not entirely relevant to the subject at hand doesn't mean I don't understand it.

And the French are expelling the Roma, too. It is like a whole holiday of intolerance!

On a completely unrelated note, my puppy is a basset hound and of course she probably has less relationship to France then French Fries, but anyhow it amuses me to think of her speaking to us in a Monty Python-esque French accent. This usually goes like:

I pee on your carpet you Scottish pig-dog! Ah-ha ha!

No bad dog! Out you go.

Ha ha watch as I dig up the sprinkler head and chew holes in your PVC pipes - you collector of other people's waste products!

Ya. Fun times. Dogs: awesome. Puppies: oh man...well at least my four year old is totally in love with the basset.

Hehe....wasn't aimed at you dude. But if I'd written *Gbaji/Varus/ThiefX* instead of *Interwebz poster*, I would have been either drowned in a swamp of verbosity/been insulted by a hillbilly/or had to decipher what the speshul kid at the back was trying to articulate.

Or did I misunderstand "Seriously"? In which case, what?
