France Bans the BurqaFollow

PARIS—France's Parliament banned the burqa, niqab and other full-body robes worn by some Muslim women, passing a law forbidding people to conceal their faces in public.

The bill passed Tuesday after a final vote in the Senate, one of the French parliament's two chambers, and is scheduled to come into force after a six-month observation period. At parliament's request, the law will be reviewed by France's Constitutional Council before it is formally promulgated.

"Showing one's face is a question of dignity and equality in our republic," said Justice Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie during Tuesday's debate in the Senate.

Yeah, it's pretty disgraceful. And retarded. Retardedly disgraceful, in fact. That's what they get for voting Sarkozy at the last election. The guy came to power by courting the votes of the national front, people shouldn't be surprised if he comes out with national front policies.

Add to this the forced eviction of gypsies and Romas, some of whom are even sent back to Romania even though it's completely illegal under the free movement of individuals in the EU, and you have some pretty messed up policies. It can only mean one thing, really. The president's re-election campaign has started.
