I'm sorry for not believing your story at all. It could have happened, I just seriously doubt it.. Why would a group of gang members be scared of one person, especially if they specifically targeted you and your "gf". If they had planned to attack either one of you, then they would have known that you would put up a struggle.
Unless they showed signs of them planning of attacking you, which you left out of your story, they had no reason to run. Even if they did plan to attack, "they were following me" doesn't justify you to shoot anybody and even gang bangers know that much. They would have either kept walking, looking at you crazy or taunted you in a way and kept going.

I kind of assumed Varus was trying to use the chihuahua as his 'girlfriend' and that's why the Mexicans were following him.
