Tare, DSD, other people who I don't necessarily remember where you live but may have reason to contribute...any concerns about the incoming hurricane? Feeling the need to make any preparations or anything?

We're supposed to get a tiny bit of it, but all my preparations consist of is planning a museum day for Saturday since I doubt we'll want to be outside, haha.

We have plans for the spending Saturday at the Ren Faire out doors with my 3 children and grand kids to celebrate my youngest getting married. A good heavy rain always divides the true Rennies from Muggles.

Only thing Earl is changing in way of our plans, is that I be wearing for garb, pants and boots instead of skirts, with my bodice instead of the leather corset.

Dragon Inn has roof and a little rain never hurt anyone. Then most storms are wimpy, by time they reach us in Sept. It's storms in middle of winter, that scare us.

I've lived on Long Island(NY) since I was eight years old, and have been through many a hurricane. Other than make sure we have sufficient food and drink in the house to last a few days, as well as common sense items (batteries, lantern fuel, gas for the generator and chainsaw), we really don't do much. No plywood over the windows, no storm cellars... just hunker down and sit it out.

Every time we get hit by a hurricane there are people that think its a good idea to go down to the beach/boardwalk/harbor etc, to see the waves. Invariably some of them get dragged in... sometimes they die, sometimes they get rescued. But they're there every time.

I'm supposed to fly home from NY on Friday and there's some talk of heavy storms then, although if the hurricane hits NS, it's supposed to be Saturday so I may be OK.

That said, even if I get home, we've got some dead trees we weren't able to cut down yet, that may get knocked down in the winds. Hopefully, they fall away from the house...

I plan on getting some decent sleep thanks to rain, but I'm far enough inland where all I have to worry about is minor flooding.

I'd imagine it'll bring some thunderstorms to Michigan. They usually do. I'm hoping the rain and wind will help cool things down here. It's September, I should be comfortable outside... not drowning in this humidity.

If they're anything like the team last year, don't bother.

What? ... Oh, gotcha.

Imma stock up on candles, water, & munchies but thats about it. I'm on the 2nd floor & no longer in downtown Boston, so I don't think flooding will be an issue for us should Earl hit Boston.

I have yet to really prepare for any of the "hurricanes" we've seen here. They usually only have tropical storm powah by the time they reach us, though Hurricane Fran did rip the roof off my house in 1996 so I suppose the potential exists. I's stock up on food and water, gas and maybe plan a "camp out in the bathroom" game.

Haha. Hope it's not too brutal, Nexa! ;)

Living in upstate New York along the Hudson, I don't really have much to fear from hurricanes. Except, being in the woods, the occasional falling trees taking out power lines, the only preparations we make are, like Deathwysh said, are common lack-of-power items. And, since we live in the woods in upstate NY, we usually have those items stocked at any given time anyways.

I think storms are fun in any case.

Well, we've had some pretty strong W/NW winds for the past few days, and pretty heavy rain storms the last couple days.

Two nights ago my cousin hit a tree while driving to work (3rd shift). The tree was knocked down across the road and she didn't see it. Last night the power went out at about 1am. I woke up at 3am and it was pitch black, no light outside, no light inside. It really makes walking to the bathroom difficult. Luckily the power came back on at about 7:30, just 15 minutes after I woke up for the day.

I knew we were going to get heavy wind/rain because of this storm. We usually do. It's fairly calm right now. Cloudy, not much sun, but the wind and rain have stopped. Good thing is the NW winds have brought in some nice cool air and the humidity has dropped. It feels much nicer around here now.

We had a lovely day, bit windy but dry from lack of rain. Perfect Renn Festival weather.

Oh...I'd forgotten about the hurricane thingy. Probably due to my distance from the coast. Explains the weather though...

- Clear, crisp, sunny morning
- Occasional clouds by noon
- Random patchy dark-looking clouds
- Occasional afternoon sun showers
- Kickass rainbow at evening
- Very comfortable temperatures

I lost 2 trees. One wnet down in the front yard and somehow managed to not take out the cable/phone lines running in from the pole on the street. Haven't figured out how it missed them though.

Lost one in the back yard, that split and the back half of it kicked up and beat up our fence a tad. All in all, pretty good considering what could have happened with either of those trees as one could have fell on the house instead of the fence and the other could have left me without cable/phone for 1-3 weeks.

I lived in Charleston, SC back when Hurricane Hugo hit in 89. It ripped the roof off the house we lived in, and placed it in the back yard. And the two trees by our house were then inside the house. One fell through the front door, the other fell through the kitchen.

We had evacuated prior to the storm though, and were staying inland at a friends house. We ended up having to move, the house was pretty much completely demolished. We ended up getting a house down the road from where the old one was.

Hugo was my daughter's first hurricane, though by the time it got north to us it was just a windbag without any punch.

They have yet to experience anything like the damage Agnes was when I was a teenager. My sister house was just above the flood waters in Ellicott City, MD.

Ivan left me stranded in Pittsburgh, Pa for 2 days, as I waited for the flood water to recede below the rail tracks in Harrisburg. I was actually on the last train to make it into Pittsburgh, when it started to flood. My friend who was picking me up had to make several detours to get to his house and my hotel. After the rest of our friends were able to leave by plane or car, I ended up sleeping on his futon for 2 nights.

My sister who works for Amtrak check the passenger list of all trains going to Philly, so when I finally arrived in Baltimore, she had used her ID to come on board and help me off the train.

Sorry I havent been on for ages and just seeing this now Smiley: frown

I may be a freak.... wait... we all know I am... but thats beside the point... I was really looking forward to a possible good storm. We got nothing. Zip, zilch, zero. It was pretty disappointing. My mom lives on the coast of NC now and they were projected to get some of the storm. The area where her husband works was even evacuated. She said they got almost nothing too.
