My morning bagel shop is closing down on Saturday. I'm kinda spazzing out. My morning bagel is about the only sure meal I can count on.

Funny how our habits become so crucial to us.

The place is shutting down because the ventilation system broke down - it's an old building - the building owner and the bagel-maker couldn't come to terms on an expensive fix. It leaves the poor store manager, my bagel girl, out of a job. She's got issues (she's a single mom, her dad died recently, they're foreclosing on her house, etc, etc, etc). I hear about them every morning. I consider her a friend.

I need to do something for her, but it seems like anything I can do, or any of her faithful customers for that matter, will just be too little.

I need a small but careful lil gesture.

Oh, but I stopped here this morning to retrieve this corn pudding recipe. Get your corn eatin' in - seasons ending.

p.s. Give her your job; i'm sure that'll cheer her up.

She's not qualified for my job. But thanks for the suggestion.

Elinda,

Well then why don't you and your friends all pool your resources and send her back to school so she can learn a more marketable skill?

Why not be honest with yourself? Life is so much more simple when you're not living a lie. You don't care about this person and once the store closes you will care even less.

Yeah Elinda. You should grow her some okra, at least.

You're right Varus, once the store closes, she's probably doing back to work for dairy queen. I cant stand dairy queen.

But before then, and however pretentious, I'd like to send her off with a tiny piece of gratitude for toasting me bagels.

I live in Iowa. Fresh corn doesn't stop coming off the fields until November. But, here - November is definitely the best time to buy...

Elinda, I understand. Every Saturday morning when I had to work the farmer's market in the summer I would stop at the Struedel Haus and get myself a Napoleon. It was the sweetest, and most delicious, and the only thing that would possibly qualify my saturday morning as such. Not getting my Napoleon on Saturday mornings meant it was a bad day.

I think a thank you card, with an offer inside to be a reference for future employment, might be a reasonable gesture. Maybe a tiny little gift (not money) like a bookmark or something? A pressed 4-leaf clover for luck?

You sound like a fortune cookie. Or a bad horoscope.

Same thing.
