Reports I hear from Pakistan tell me that relief efforts for flooding victims lack financial support. I would think Pakistan of all places would be carefully tended to.

Is it just media overload or do you think that the numbers and severity of natural disasters has increased sufficiently that we can no longer keep up with rudimentary assistance?

Media overload is probably 85% of it.

And we can't just give money all willy-nilly to Pakistan! They'll just end up spending it on promoting terrorism!

Our cleaner listens to talk radio, and it was a topic of conversation that I overheard the other day.

It would seem that even in NZ we have enough dropkicks that believe Pakistan is the capital of some country called Al Qeada, and the main reason that they are under 6 feet of watery sewage is because either a) They are immoral towel-heads with too many children or b) God hates them.

I hate talk radio.

Maybe the governments of N. Korea and Iran can send some aid their way. After all, they owe Pakistan quite a bit!

I really don't think the amount of natural events has gone up. More likely the world has gotten smaller. As my father told me the one major thing that has happend in our lifetime is that the world has gotten smaller. Events that took days, weeks, months for us to find out about now take seconds, or a few min for the world to know.

That's a good point, I think.

However, we had some pretty massive and destructive flooding in Nashville at the beginning of May. They called it the hundred year (some said five hundred year) flood. This week, we've had more flooding up towards Cookeville. Roads washed away, trains turned over, it was pretty bad.

I can't decide which is worse, the two large floods we've had this summer, or the drought we had a few years ago.

By the way, Nad, you guys ok up there?

I think floods are worse than droughts. Buildings tend not to be destroyed during droughts.

India, of all places, is kicking in some monies to save the Pakistanis..AND they've agreed to accept it.

2009, by the way, was mild for natural disasters measured by the number of deaths. Though it seems 2010 will be a kicker. The over all trend since 2000 is slightly upward.

Per capita? Or in raw numbers? Populations have increased, so it makes sense the overall number of deaths due to natural disasters would rise in a general way.

The particular report I was looking at was raw numbers, but it was only since 2000. The numbers of disaster events has the same trend. I was looking at EM-DAT, a research arm of WHO. It's kind of interesting. I specifically waited until after work to look up some info yesterday. Now here I am pouring over disaster data at work!!...I'm sure there's a way I can incorporate this knowledge into my work;)

Earthquakes triggered by droughts? Or floods?

It's only 4 million people homeless. It's not a big deal if they die. They've got 166 million more.

A little bit more of that sort of selflessness over 9/11 and just think of the money and heartache it would've saved!
