multiple serial killers were in LA...undetectedFollow

In total, about 100 killings may be linked to the serial killers between about 1984 and 1993, according to the LA Times article:

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/aug/04/local/la-me-serial-killers-20100804

I think we have expectations that serial crime on this scale will be detected as such and appropriate warnings issued.

The Robert Pictin case in BC showed that the authorities are all to ready to ignore crimes against marginalized sectors of society.

Technology has come a long way even since the early 90's that help tie multiple cases to one crazed killer. But, yeah, there is still the issue of class prioritization.

So what I don't know about the Pickton case:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Pickton
is if the police actually knew/suspected there was a series of killings, at all, or not before arresting him.

What the BC police are very sorry about is that they did not catch him sooner. The LA police still maintain they did the best they could at the time - and did not detect any patterns to any of the killings. No warnings, no suspected patterns reported to the press. Maybe this was the same in BC.

As Xsarus points out, maybe this happens everywhere, but if I heard this happened within the US, I would immediately guess LA. LA has always had the lowest ratio of police to citizens of any major city in the US and probably in the developed world. The tradeoff has historically been that the police use more force - act more like a paramilitary organization - then other police forces. Thus there is a much more adversarial relationship between some segments of the population and the police.

It happens in all major metro areas, though. Green River, BTK, Joel Rifkin or whatever his name was, the recent serial arrested in Detroit, the guy a couple of years ago in the NO area. As long as they prey on prostitutes, runaways and drug users, they can get away with it for a very long time.

With the picktin case, police knew girls were disappearing, but the officers who said they thought it was a serial kidnapper/killer were ignored and marginalized. The fact that there were no bodies made this easier.

Following on what Yossarian was saying about the L.A. area, apparently jurisdictional cooperation is not all it could be in the greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. That was allegedly a major problem in solving and prosecuting the Hillside Strangler case.

The world would be a less exciting place without at least some operating serial killers. Also, this country would actually have too many hookers, and some of them would struggle to find enough food to make it through the long winter months and they might die. Los Angeles, for instance, with its streets lined in mounds of dead cUnt, would come to a standstill as folks pulled to the side of the and took advantage of the intercourse gratis. Plus, think of all the money pimps put back into the local economy. Serial killers really do the eco-system and the economy a valuable service by thinning the herd.

Yeah, but is it because of the nature of the victim, or the lack of people representing the victim's interests, postmortem?

One follows from the other, I guess. No one vaults up onto their white horse to avenge your average crack ho. They tend not to have political connections, or family powerful enough (or together enough, presumably) to keep the cops' focus on their sister/mom/ex's murder.
