hmm, this is making me reconsider buying the nook, even though I like the touchpad interface idea, and the fact that you can lend books.

Yea, I check one out everytime I'm in a Barnes and Noble's and I do like the Nook, A lot. But I don't see why it needs all that bells and whistles. Sure the touch screen is nice but it's heavier and more intrusive to my reading. That and it's painfully slow.

I don't like the touchpad idea. Two problems I see. Either the entire device is a touchpad, which is a problem if you accidentally hit the screen while reading, or it's that stupid colour screen at the bottom, which I think would be distracting while reading a book. All you really need on an e-reader is a way to find your book and a way to change the page and perhaps font size. Anything more is just clutter.

That and lending books appeal to me but at the same time, you can just torrent a book if you want it really bad.

The color touch screen at the bottom shuts off when you're reading a book. You just tap it to come back on.

The new wireless kindle is boasting a month of battery life with the wireless off, which is impressive.

Too bad they didn't lower the price on the DX. I guess no one's competing with them there yet.

Yeah, that's what I wondered. they don't say.

It seems at first glance that amazon ebooks are more expensive then the B&N ebooks.

And, unless they've changed it, you can't get epub books on the Kindle. Amazon onry.

Well, technically no, but it's easy to convert the epub into the kindle open book format. Use Calibre.

But they can do PDF's, which is what most torrented books come as. So problem solved there too.

They just upgraded their software to be able to zoom in on PDFs too. I may actually try to get some school textbooks on it in the future.

PDFs are really horrible on e-readers. I convert them to a better format before using them.

I think that's a matter of choice there. I don't mind them.

In fact, I picked up a 5,000 page PDF of every handbook in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition, ever. It's awesome. I should just buy a damn Kindle and get it over with.

My Kobo goes roughly 1.5 weeks (just had to charge it for the first time) and it's on pretty much constantly (wife reads a lot and she's home all day). That being said, that's with loading a whole bunch of books to check out, it being new and all. If you're just reading you don't use much power at all, the only power used is to change the page. If you were to rip the battery out while reading the text would stay on the screen.

If they're saying a month, I'd say 3 weeks more likely. It'll go a month if you're just reading the same book, but you won't be.

Have you seen it on a Kindle though? PDFs are great for computer monitors, not so good for little e-reader screens. Most don't flow right.

I really want to get an eReader of some sort. I've been leaning towards the Kindle because of the price and Kao's absolute endorsement of it. I need someting that I can read at the beach without toting a buttload of books and magazines.

Well technically, you are toting a buttload. Over 3000! I believe they can hold.

Ok. So... When the zombies are coming after you, would you want paper books, or an e-reader?

No, you need to hit them in the head with something large and heavy, like a hardcover advanced textbook.
