Last manufactured roll of Kodachrome film developed
Quote:
Freelance photojournalist Steve McCurry, whose work has graced the pages of National Geographic, laid 36 slides representing the last frames of Kodachrome film on the light board sitting on a counter in Dwayne's Photo Service in Parsons.

He placed a lupe, a magnifier that makes it easier to view film, over one frame and took a closer look at the film.

McCurry told Dwayne's vice president Grant Steinle how he had chosen to shoot the last roll of Kodachrome produced by Eastman Kodak by capturing images around New York.

"Then we went to India, where I photographed a tribe that is actually on the verge of extinction. It's actually disappearing, the same way as Kodachrome," he told Steinle.

Kodak announced last year that it would retire Kodachrome, a brand name of color reversal film it had manufactured since 1935. McCurry, well-known for his 1984 photograph of Sharbat Gula, or the "Afghan Girl," published on the cover of National Geographic magazine, requested from Kodak to shoot the last roll of 36 frames it manufactured.

Granted Kodachrome has always been something of a specialty film with a difficult developing process compared to Ektachrome or whatever but this story reminded me of how completely digital cameras have taken over in a rather short period of time. Also, it makes me feel old. The images off the roll will be published in National Geographic next spring sometime.

Any of you folks with an undeveloped roll of Kodachrome around you have until Dec 10th to send it to Dwayne's Photo Service, the last place on earth still developing the film.

Nice to have Steve McCurry take the last photo's, he's a damn good photographer.

Quote:
Rather than paying Dwayne's Photo in cash for the processing of the film, McCurry offered to cut Steinle a deal. In exchange for the processing, McCurry offered to create a special print of one of the slides and have it framed and mounted with a letter of authenticity included and send it to Steinle.

It was a deal Steinle accepted eagerly.
Now that's a nice deal.

It is kinda sad.

My daughter is officially a professional photographer now. At the ripe old age of 24 she has often lamented over the extinction of film. She claims that manipulating her own pictures in the make-shift darkroom of the middle school is what got her 'hooked'. Even with her own darkroom equipment though (B+W only), I don't think she'd be making money taking pictures if she had to use film.

I still have a Polaroid camera for work. Film for that is getting mighty hard to come by these days as well.

Oh and Kodachrome - nice summer tune. I think I need to find some S&G to listen.

What sort of photography/got a link to some work online?
I'm currently studying to become a photographer so this got me curious.
And my school moved last January, there aren't even any darkrooms in the new school so I probably won't even learn how to manually process photos.
Kind of sad but on the other hand, if I had to print out all the photos I'm taking for school I couldn't afford it Smiley: lol

I'm not a photographer, but I assume that if there are some benefits to actual film photography, then it will stay around, even if just for professionals.

It's the same benefit that analog recording has over digital for music. Digital photography is a sampling of light read by a chip and translated in to data. There will always be holes. Really slow film speeds can capture clean, enlargeable images with detail no digital camera can reproduce.

The professional stuff (2 weddings and one 'engagment' shoot) she can't make public. She's got a ton of her artsy stuff on her facebook and flicker pages, but I'm kind of hesitant to post that info here cuz you whackos are scary.

Her bachelors degree is in Cinematography - Photography (that was the actual name of the discipline), but honestly, the degree wasn't necessary for the work she's gotten. She truly has been a photographer most all her short life. Her desire is to be a documentary photographer - she'll need either more schooling or a lucky break to make that happen.

Why anonymous? Just slap a big ol' © <name here> text over the image.
Add a website/email and you've got free publicity.

My husband kept using a film camera for a long time at work because he shoots sports pictures and the first digital cameras were way too slow for any kind of action shot. But now he uses digital because they make some now that are really fast. Granted, those cost a few thousand, so not many people have them.

Yeah, but I've gotten a lot of flak for being indirect and obscure in the past.

Besides, I would have got with cross thread shenanigans via
