You zany Ameh'cuns and your 4th July shenanigans!

Here in the motherland we don't dogmatically obey public holidays based on a constitution or a tradition of the Founding Fathers.

We Brits obey the holidays dictated to us by the institutionalised church and an hereditary Monarch.
Democracy Schmemocracy.

Srsly, hope you all had a wonderful Independence Day, avoided stuffing firecrackers up your children's fundaments and thanked whichever God you follow for your freedom.

If you can't discern the taste difference between gas & charcoal, urdoinitwrng.

We host a little shindig with 5 or 6 other families. I spent the day smoking the ever-loving **** out of 30 lbs. of ribs & 2 ~8 lb. bone in pork shoulders (the wife won't let me go whole pig yet. :\ ). Round about 3 o'clock the rest of the folks began trickling in and it was pale ale and Cohibas in the driveway with the other men folk while the weemens watched the kidlets. The girls got pissed off at the whistling rockets, the mens got mostly blotto and the kids tried desperately to re-create the battle of bunker hill with Nerf dart guns and swords. I then managed to not blow myself up with the fireworks display that I put on and passed out sometime after 2 AM.

Pretty standard weekend with more meat and fireworks than usual.

I've done a whole pig once, but It arrived in a massive BBQ ready to go so all we had to do was keep the temperature steady. Still delicious and carving it up was a blast.

Lechon, as called by the Filipinos. I love pork like that. But my uncles killed my pet baby pig on my birthday to cook him so I have conflicting emotions about whole roasted pig.

If you're using either of these you're doing it wrong.

My brother and I set up a grill on gay st and grilled hamburgers and hotdogs for the masses, 2 dollar dogs with homemade coleslaw (yes everything came out of the garden) and 3 dollar hamburgers 4 cheeseburgers, then watched fireworks. I'll post pics on my facebook soon.

I'm sure I'll regret it later, but what, pray tell, should I be using?

I'm sure you did. The MSM action ensued, I'll bet.

Mobi,

Instead of gas or charcoal? Depends on what you're grilling; we prefer mesquite with a brisket and hickory, apple, or cherry for hamburgers.

Finally back home in GA. We ended up going to the Iwojima memorial with about 3,000 other people. Absolutely perfect view of the fireworks over the Washington Monument. Between the parties, the boat ride over the Potomac, and the museums, it was well worth the 10 hour drive to DC.

And because we couch-surfed and brought our own food, the total cost of the trip was under $200.

I wasn't "grilling" anything, you insufferable ****. Read the thread next time before you put finger to keyboard.

I was smoking ribs and pork shoulder using hardwood lump charcoal for heat and hickory chunks for smoke.
