WV Senator Byrd has now passed on to the other side. He was a piece of sh*t and I'm glad he's gone.

No, clearly that is not what I'm asking. I asked what have you done for your country lately.

Have you served in the military, organized a community, run for office, worked in a soup kitchen, recycled your paperboard...anything Varus...anything at all????

Wikipedia wrote:
Byrd joined with other Southern and border state Democrats to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964,[21] personally filibustering the bill for 14 hours, a move he had since said he regretted. Despite an 83-day filibuster in the Senate, both parties in Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Act, and President Johnson signed the bill into law. He also opposed the Voting Rights Act of 1965, but voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1968. In 2005, Byrd told The Washington Post that his membership in the Baptist church led to a change in his views. In the opinion of one reviewer, Byrd, along with other Southern and border state Democrats, came to realize that he would have to temper "his blatantly segregationist views" and move to the Democratic Party mainstream if he wanted to play a role nationally.

Because of his opposition to desegregation, Byrd was a member of this Democratic Party wing that opposed desegregation and civil rights imposed by the Federal Government. However, despite his early career in the KKK, Byrd was linked to such Senators as John C. Stennis, J. William Fulbright or George Smathers, who based their segregationist positions on their conception of states' rights in contrast to, for example, James Eastland, who held a reputation as a committed racist.

Strange, seems like your kind of guy.

Seriously though, from my quick skimming of the Wikipedia article about him, he seems to have helped bring money to West Virginia when it was one of the poorest states, started a scholarship fund, helped to bring tv cameras into the senate, and he knew everything about how the senate works.

Doesn't seem like a piece of sh*t to me...except for the KKK/segregation thing...

Jophed,

Yeah I'm sure Jesus would be saddened by my lack of concern for that evil piece of sh*t.

Didn't Jesus cast demons out of the possessed?

Elinda,

Sometimes it's better to do nothing than to openly steal from your neighbor. Not that I expect you to understand what i'm talking about here.

Today? Nothing. But then, it's only 9:45 in the morning. I've got time.

OHHHHH! It's the using taxes to help the country in general that you hate. I forgot that you believe that the country as a whole can go **** itself if the individual is inconvenienced.

Absolutely. In fact, not once in the Gospels do I recall Jesus calling someone a piece of shit.

What's that? Did Jesus show compassion and love for the afflicted? Why yes he did.

I never cared much for Byrd. I could never tell if his movement away from segregationism and racism was genuine or just a ploy to keep himself on the national radar.

I won't go so far as to say "I'm glad he's dead" or compare him to a demon, though. Mighty convenient thing for a Christian to be able to do. Jesus forgave sinners, but apparently cast out demons. How do you twist that to read "Jesus hates sinners?" Make a sinner a demon.

Ash,

Jesus seemed pretty p*ssed at the pharisees when he threw over their little tables.

Actually it's stealing that I hate. Just because you approve of theft because some good may come out of it doesn't make it any less wrong. It's truly sad that liberals don't get this. And it's also why nearly half this country relies on some kind of govn "assistance", theft, to support themselves and their family.

No honestly, I don't. I don't understand why you live in a country that you don't support.

Interesting that you'd mention the case of J. Christ vs Pharisees:

Quote:
An important binary in the New Testament is the opposition between law and love. Accordingly, the New Testament presents the Pharisees as obsessed with man-made rules (especially concerning purity) whereas Jesus is more concerned with God’s love; the Pharisees scorn sinners whereas Jesus seeks them out. Because of the New Testament's frequent depictions of Pharisees as self-righteous rule-followers (see also Woes of the Pharisees), the word "pharisee" (and its derivatives: "pharisaical", etc.) has come into semi-common usage in English to describe a hypocritical and arrogant person who places the letter of the law above its spirit.
