Petraeus is taking over operations in Afghanistan.

Do you think McCrystal knew what the outcome would be when he did the Rolling Stone interview?...how could he not.

So, he wanted out?

I doubt it. The Afghanistan operation and strategy were his baby. While the usual suspects may cry that the administration didn't just leave him a blank check, it's his plans that we're using there.

McChrystal wasn't bound to his job by anything but duty. He could have stepped down if he didn't want to be there much more gracefully than to get himself fired for insubordination. People who are suggesting that he intentionally sabotaged his career, the administration and the mission in Afghanistan just to get away from his post are doing little more than insulting the guy to try and score points against the president.

Nonsense. You can't beat blind, fanatical ignorance and the peace of mind that comes only from parroting GOP talking points in lieu of having to think. I'm sure the life of a Pubbie is one of pure bliss.

I'm wondering if anything can happen without the usual suspects here trying to give it some cutsy name in an effort to try to be witty and cutting.

I think she meant the "Betrayus" line. That was actually coined by MoveOn in response to the Iraq surge strategy. I'm sure they'll be tickled about this new story line.

Jophed,

And yet you're the one who said you're voting party line regardless of who's running.

Smiley: dubiousHe said that this time he hates the GOP candidate enough to vote DEM even though he hates the DEM candidate as well. Last time he voted GOP. That's hardly blindly voting the party line. It's the lesser of two evils. It's not like there's another choice.

also wtf does this have to do with this thread?

Actually, last time I voted Republican on that ticket. I could vote Green but I don't know anything about the guy and won't cast it purely as a protest vote. At least "preserve the Democratic majority and the committee assignments, etc that it brings" is a more compelling reason that "just 'cause".

You don't rush to change the topic unless you realize you're being laughed at.

Jophed,

So I guess you've forgotten the treatment Petraus received from Reid and Obama while Obama was in the senate.

Typical

Here's some of that harsh Obama treatment though...
Reuters in 2008 wrote:
(Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who has called for withdrawing U.S. combat troops from Iraq, said on Sunday he will vote to confirm the top commander there for a new job as head of the military's Central Command.

President George W. Bush has nominated Gen. David Petraeus, who led the buildup of troops in Iraq, to be in charge of operations across the Middle East and Central Asia.

If confirmed by the Senate, Petraeus will still be in that job when the next president replaces Bush at the White House in January 2009. Obama hopes that person is him.

"Yes," Obama told "Fox News Sunday" when asked if, as a senator from Illinois, he would approve Petraeus. "I think Petraeus has done a good tactical job in Iraq."

Obama has said he would start pulling out more troops as soon as he became president.

"My hope is that Petraeus would reflect that wider view of our strategic interest," he said on "Fox News Sunday."

"I will listen to General Petraeus given the experience that he has accumulated over the last several years," Obama said. "It would be stupid of me to ignore what he has to say."

"It would be my job as commander in chief to set the mission, to make the strategic decisions in light of the problems that we're having in Afghanistan, in light of the problems that we are having in Pakistan, the fact that al Qaeda is strengthening," Obama said.

OMG THE HORROR OF IT ALL!!!!

Edit: News story about the 2007 Senate hearings. Pretty benign stuff from the current Commander in Chief.

Jophed,

I've got some quotes of my own;

Quote:
"This is not a criticism of you gentlemen but a criticism of the President," Obama said.
However, the Illinois Senator accused Petraeus of dodging questions about the overarching Iraq war strategy. "You've punted a little bit," Obama said. " We don't have limitless resources … the question is one of strategy not tactics."

Quote:
"We have the president in Australia suggesting somehow that we are, as was stated before, kicking A-S-S.," Obama said. "How can we have a president making that assessment?"

Bard,

Trust me if Obama wasn't running for office at the time the remarks would have been much harsher.

Why do the Democrats always have problems with the military?
