We really should use the right words. Optimism and pessimism have nothing to do with it. I'm optimistic that this law will result in less terrorism. Whether or not your an optimist has nothing to do with the fact that regardless of your compassion some people just want to poke the big kid on the block. That you believe showing kindness may limit that only proves you're naive and foolish.

I think you misunderstood me. I'm not suggesting we send doctors to the Taliban with flowers and smiles and that will make them stop wanting to kill us. But if one guy shows up at a doctor's office and makes it no secret that he's a member of the Taliban, I think it's possible that showing him kindness and compassion could make him think twice about what he's doing.

Or maybe you understood me just fine and you're just a curmudgeon. That's possible. Smiley: tongue

I think this is a pretty scary assumption to make about people. This list is not a bunch of convicted killers. These people are nameless, seldom accused and not tried by any court of law.

But to be on the safe side....you better stay inside.

Or, and I know it's a stretch given how obscenely obtuse I can be at times, I understood you just fine and am really trying to drive home what I see as a fundamental flaw in the offered alternative world-view.

Oh yeah, curmudgeonly, even.Smiley: bah

Nah. That can't be it.

Personally, I don't have a problem with 'assuming' someone is dangerous because they participate in a known terrorist organization. If they were so nice and normal, they wouldn't run in those types of circles.

See, if we just talked it out with the terrorists like we do here in the Asylum, we could all reach a mutual agreement to disagree, and everybody could be happy! Quick, somebody send bin Laden a friend request!

I'm not sure what right you're referring to. The right to provide resources to enemies of the state?
The right to free speech.

There are any number of things you can't say and hide behind free speech. Giving aid to an enemy of the state just happens to be one of them. I suppose you think inciting a riot should be just fine, too. Is banning yelling "FIRE!" in a crowded movie theatre a hacking of our civil rights as well?

Just thought I'd point out that, yes, banning yelling "FIRE!" in a crowded movie theatre is hacking away at our right to free speech. But it's a necessary limitation - but a limitation nonetheless.

As for the OP, eh, I don't think it'll be abused much. I highly doubt it would be used in the "I'm a doctor and dunno my patient!" scenario IRL.

I don't see it that way. I've always believed that our rights stopped when the exercise of them would cause harm, outside of self defense. Yelling fire in a crowded theatre places others at harm and is, as a result, outside the right to free speech.

Hey this could be the next remake of Romeo and Juliet. Some american hotty falls in love with a Tamil Tiger's brother, but you know it's against US law for her to give him aid and stuff. There's some dancing with US troops and terrorists, then she flees with homemade bombs strapped all over her. Her love finds her just in time to fall into her arms as she pulls the pin.
