That's how conservative positions are derived. Those are the positions I defend. Yes, even if the person arriving at the position does so for the wrong reasons. If I've arrived at a position via that process, I'm not going to agree with someone attacking the position because someone else has a really dumb reason for holding it. Yet, that's often what ends out happening. And when that happens, I will disagree with said other persons dumb reasoning, but make it absolutely clear that the end position they're supporting is correct and give my reasons for it.
That doesn't mean I'm defending that person though. But I can totally understand why some would want to make that the focus of any discussion on the issue. It's easier to dismiss my positions and reasoning by arguing against everything else other than those things, so that's what most people do. Don't worry. I'm both amused by it, and quite used to it by now. I'd be shocked if one day the bulk of this board wasn't so predictable. ;)
