I love this guy. I'd fly to Salt Lake just to buy this guy a drink.

My favorites:

It was anti-climactic, another day at the office.

There's just some people we need to kick off the planet.

The death penalty is nothing more than sending a defective product back to the manufacturer.

Nephy,

This guy did murder an attorney; that should count for something. Is this where we start the movement to label shakespeare as hate speech and ban all his works from public schools? After all he did say that the first thing we should do is kill all the lawyers.

#4 Jun 09 2010 at 1:54 PM Rating: Good
No, he didn't say that. He wrote it as a line of dialogue for one of the villains in his plays.

Kavek,

So you admit Shakespeare wrote hate speech directed towards attorneys. That's all you had to say.

After rereading twice, I just sub-def'ed him. No clue what he is trying to say.

So you admit you have no idea what dialog is.

I think I was admitting that Shakespeare wanted to kill all the lawyers. Maybe we should execute him by firing squad?

He's railing against hate speech legislation by strawmanning it so that it looks like it's in conflict with Shakespeare, an untouchable classic. It's possibly the worst argument against hate speech legislation I have ever seen.

In the mad tangent that is his first post in this thread.

Hey don't blame me Obama's the one appointing fascists like Cass Sunstein to control and regulate speech;

Quote:
SUNSTEIN: Sites of one point of view agree to provide links to other sites, so that if you're reading a conservative magazine, they would provide a link to a liberal site and vice versa, just to make it easy for people to get access to competing views. Or maybe a pop-up on your screen that would show an advertisement or maybe even a quick argument for a competing view. [break] The best would be for this to be done voluntarily, but the word "voluntary" is a little complicated, and sometimes people don't do what's best for our society unless Congress holds hearings or unless the public demands it. And the idea would be to have a legal mandate as the last resort, and to make sure it's as neutral as possible if we have to get there, but to have that as, you know, an ultimate weapon designed to encourage people to do better.

Anyway, back to the OP.

I have a little bit of a problem with this statement:

Quote:
Asked about the arguments against the death penalty -- that one race receives it disproportionately, that the poor are more likely to wind up on death row -- the officer discounts them as procedural issues that should be fixed in the courts, not the execution chamber.

Sure, okay; but since that isn't likely to happen anytime soon, is this really the best answer you can summon up? "Someone else's problem"?

It's a fact that race and social status are factors in sentencing. Are we all okay with killing poor black people disproportionately regardless of the crime for which they were convicted?*

Alternatively, would we all be okay with making some white collar crimes punishable by death?

*Yeah, I know. But let's pretend we care about ethics for the sake of argument, 'k?

I suppose I could make the usual arguments against capital punishment but, done "right", the difference between firing squad and lethal injection/electrocution seems pretty academic. Hell, firing squad would probably be the quickest of the options.

In the spirit of being more worldly, why not blow them to bits? Turban optional, of course.

ETA: We could even give them the switch and let them decide when to "pull the trigger". Then we could label them real suicide bombers and everything!

Obviously, or else he would have been exposed and succumbed to the liberal doctrine.
