Ripping DVD's to itunesFollow

#1 Jun 05 2010 at 1:50 PM Rating: Good
Hey all--

Anyone here rip DVD's to Itunes? Which program did you use and did you like it? I'm looking to obtain a program to do so but there are a lot of them out there and I'm not sure which to trust.

Thanks!

ps I realize this isn't technically an asylum question. Thus, to be qualified, I will add a gratuitous "Death to Republicans!". Errr..unless you are replying to my question and are Republican and then, well, "Liberals are pussies!!"

Kind of hard to add stuff to your iPhone/iPod without it.

Anyway I use DVD Decrypter/DVD Fab to rip and Any Video Converter to turn it into a .mp4 format.

He should at least use Quicktime, which is only useless with regards to video, rather than super-useless.

I'm assuming he's on Windows, and on Windows you would do well to stay away from iTunes. It's not like it's hard to sync using other programs.

Aside from being really slow, having no way to automatically update your library, lack of codec extensibility, nagging you to install other software you have no use for and looking nothing like the rest of your desktop?

I play mp3s on my Blackberry and use Windows Explorer to sync my files.

I use iTunes for my iPhone, and the only real issue I have with it at the moment is that it will take my new songs off of my phone and put them into iTunes if I tell it to sync instead of just copying it into iTunes. But that's not difficult to remedy. It's never asked me to install anything, starts up relatively quickly (compared to any other program on my laptop), and I'm not sure what you mean about looking nothing like the "rest of my desktop." I also don't know what "codec extensibility" is.

Are you talking specifically about watching DVD's through iTunes, or just Windows users shouldn't use iTunes for anything?

My iTunes picks up new songs I downloaded instantly and syncs them as soon as I plug my iPhone in. It's easy to navigate too. I don't see why you hate it.

I bought a portable laser projector from Microvision which attaches easily to my Ipod. I want to add DVD's from my dvd library onto Itunes so I can easily sync them onto my Ipod and watch 8 ft movies at work when slow overnight.

Incidentally, Microvision (MVIS) is the stock I picked in the stock pick'em thread we had here a couple years ago. They are currently $2.50 but are poised to get pretty high if their projector is put into cell phones which supposedly is on the near horizon. The projector they made as a proof of concept (and I bought) is amazing. It is about the size of an Iphone (and most of which is battery) and last night I took it outside and projected South Park onto the side of my house with a 20ft diagonal picture. With typical movies (which are darker then the typical South park) you have to have a smaller picture but in a dark room you can make a pretty big picture. (8ftish) It's a pretty amazing device for something so portable. At any rate, sorry it didn't hit it big the last time I recommended it but I'm recommending it again!

That actually sounds pretty awesome. How much did the projector cost?

I don't hate iTunes (I actually use it), but in my opinion the Windows version isn't very good, which is a shame.

Then disable it somehow? Mine only asks me when there's an iTunes update available.

I use DVDFab to decrypt the DVD's to their AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, then Handbrake to rip them into MP4 files. Handbrake has nice presets so you can select the device you want to target and it will use compatible encoding. It also allows for batches, so you could decrypt a bunch of DVDs, then let Handbrake encode the files and be able to walk away while it's working.

I use iTunes, but only because I use a Mac Mini for everything Apple-related.
