Can we blame it squarely on the desire not to lose in the first round at this point? It seems to me that most of the tier 2 & 3 teams have focused on a strong defense with taking advantage of opposition lapses that it has tightened it up considerably and the top tier teams have gotten frustrated by it and made those mistakes.

That was some melodramatic BS in the Italy game just there.

And an equalizer called back for offsides.

What a ******* awesome game this is turning out to be...

That's definitely a major reason. There are a few others, though, like the fact that it's taking place in Africa and we all know weird **** happens in Africa.

Bad luck. I'd have liked to see them do better.

Ok, the Slovakian goal was utter **** compared to the one the Italians have just scored to make it 3-2. Awesome game.

It's a real shame Italy are out, though it was a great match at the end. If Slovakia's midfielders hadn't made it policy to foul any Italian with the ball it might have been more interesting for the other seventy minutes.

I don't think it's a shame at all. I hate watching them. In the first rounds they always plod along and rarely do anything with the ball offensively. It's been along time since they've had any flash, Roberto Baggio's mullet was at least interesting back in the day.

Does anyone know when Italian teams started flopping at the smallest bump? They weren't terrible this go around, although they did spend more time on the ground than most other teams, but thinking back I can't remember when they didn't embellish their flops.

Edit - pic of the mullet

It would be absolutely amazing if Ivory Coast picks up enough points (and Portugal loses) to take the second spot in their group. I'm routing for them.

How do you get credentialed to do woodworking on the pitch in South Africa?

A passport and a plane ticket, I assume.

I can't believe how well this draw is turning out for the US. Ghana in the second round, and then a Quarter final against the winner from South Korea - Uruguay? Could this be the first semi-final in the US's football history?
