North Korea's in the World Cup? Amazing. I wonder if they make vague threats to their opponents if things don't go their way.

They will respond militarily to any bookings made by the head referee or any supplemental judgment made by FIFA.

I wonder what will happen to their families/them when they lose.

I never thought I'd say this, but... GO NORTH KOREA!!

I also liked the NK striker who was crying his eyes out during the anthem. He's not even a proper NK, he was born in Japan and had the apply for NK citizenship. Crazy...

You've presumably read a post by Varus, so you know there are stupid people in the world.

Me too, by the way. I'm finding myself rooting just a bit for DPRK on this one.

Yeah, it's a strange feeling, even for a european pinko. But they do have spirit.

I also liked the fact that the NK manager refused to answer any questions where his country was referred to as North Korea. DPRK all the way!

Happy to see them get on the board with the late goal. That puts them in contention for a spot if they can pull 3 points out of the next two since Portugal/CIV was nil-nil.

Yeah, it was a good goal too. Brazil were pretty average, but still, it's an incredible achievement for NK. Especially since I can't imagine everyone can afford a football in that country. I suppose the benefit of practising with skulls is that your feet get hard, but still.

North Korean rhetoric is hilarious. They think they're communists Smiley: laugh

Holland looked good but they needed the world's worst own goal to open the score...
And I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Danish for their excellent goal.
The Dutch were slow and it was pretty damn average until Elia got in and gave us a little bit of creativity and show (and the goal)

As far as Brazil vs North Korea, the Koreans played with superb discipline and for a long time completely locked down Brazil, but it's not the most fun to watch style of playing.
The fact that they pretty much had an 8 man defense probably helped as well.

Edited to add: The Dutch commentator also said that the North Korean "fans" were actually hired Chinese people because NK didn't want to risk letting actual North Koreans go out of fear of them escaping.

Elia was superb. Some of his tricks, whilst not necessarily effective, were pretty impressive. I'm hoping he starts the next game, him on one side and Robben on the other could be devastating. The only worry with Holland is their defence kinda sucks, but other than that, they're looking very good...

I think he was being facetious when he said that...

Honduras had a player called "Welcome". Can't imagine that's a native Honduras name, but maybe Flea will correct me on this one. It was a pretty ****** game, but the Chile No7 (Sanchez?) looked very impressive. He's going to a big club at the end of this WC, for sure.

My AOL portal doesn't allow me access to the interwebs :(

And for those of you who missed some of the WC action, here's a little site with all the highlights. In LEGO form. USA v England is a favourite of mine, but there are others...

Well that is not going to help at all with the difficulty in telling them apart. Smiley: oyvey

50 minutes and a bit in, Switzerland 1 - Spain 0.
#69 Jun 16 2010 at 9:11 AM Rating: Excellent
I'd rather be lucky than good?

That seems to be the theme at the moment.

EDIT: What happens to Spain now? Do they stop being so damn cute with the passes (nearly 400 attempts in the first half), or do they get sloppy and allow another tally?

Yep - another 'goal against the run of play' match Smiley: facepalm

How can normally exciting teams like Brasil, Italy, Spain and Argentina play such dull-as-dishwater games?

Boring World Cup is Boring Smiley: glare

I am LOVING this game. Spain are not playing that badly, they're just missing easy chances. I do hope Spain end up winning this game, as Switzerland in the last 16 would be pretty crap.

Spain should keep playing the way do, but tuck away the chances they do get...

I'd love a Swiss win. All the salad tossing the Spaniards receive from the panels on ESPN will be turned on its head.
#73 Jun 16 2010 at 9:46 AM Rating: Excellent
Honestly, Spain only have themselves to blame. 25-odd shots and not a single goal, that's just poor. Torres was awful, he's clearly not match fit. And Fabregas should've come on at some point...

But yeah, well done to the Swiss, they earned their win. A win against Honduras and a draw against Chile, and they'll finish the group top. Who would've thunk it...

What's the Euro equivalent to the American expression "Any given Sunday"?

Boringly, I guess it's "There are no easy games in international football"

Although I prefer: "even broken clocks are accurate twice a day"

That was a fun game. I can't wait to see how the Spaniards react to this.
