I wonder if telling someone to shut the hell up ever actually validates/wins/ends an argument with anyone over 8.
If so, I could have saved myself a lot of intelligent responses by just attacking someone personally and avoiding the meat of the issue.

It works if you add "Or die!" to the end of it.

I tend to have a healthy fear of prosecution. Maybe that's why I don't use it.

Just get yourself a set of these, and hand them out as necessary.

Quite respectful, actually.

I've found that a brash "STFU" isn't quite as effective as a vapid, blank-eyed stare. Most people will generally catch on after 20 seconds or so and storm off in frustration (although the unstable ones might go for your jugular).

Joph's debating skills are somewhat lackluster in real life.

I have had one opportunity to use it in an argument, and had the authority to make it stick. That's the important part. I was done explaining something for the 8th time, he was not long for the company and I told him to shut the f'uck up and leave my office. He was the one with the blank stare and he still walked away 20 seconds later.

I use the vapid, blank-eyed stare, followed shortly by a sharp "...what?" to great effect on the wife.

The other one that's tricky is the "You don't get to have an opinion on this because you haven't been there." While it's true to a degree, it doesn't seem to hold universally. The same person who will tell you you don't know what it's like to be a serviceman will insist that they know about being a minority.

But the gay black guy that told me that seemed so credible...

The flip side of that is the "I feel your pain, because as a wealthy skinny blonde I am also a minority."

I thought that women were supposed to win arguments by goading the man into saying something a bit much, and then crying.

Are we talking about in person or on a forum?

In either case, STFU is ineffective.

Usually I find people who are wrong have drawn conclusions from wrong or incomplete information. Finding out what that information is usually helps determine what, if anything, can help them.

If it is an emotional thing - I'm usually not willing to try to work with the person. And it depends on how old they are. At some point, if they are so fossilized in their views (usually these people no longer work and thus are limited in their influence over other people) then even if they are close to me I just state I completely disagree with them and, if it is really bad enough, leave.

Forums are a bit different. Can't leave due to a racist or three.

More effective accompanied by a swift punch to the temple.
