According to lolCNN, Al Gore and Tipper are splitting up

The interesting part of this story, to me at least, isn't that they are splitting but that they decided to notify friends and family via a mass email. Is it just me, or is this an odd way of breaking such serious news to friends and family? Call me old fashioned, but I don't think this is inbox appropriate.

Then again, the man DID invent the internet, and as such gets to bend the rules a bit.

Hi,
We wanted to share this personal news with you because we care so much about you as a friend:
We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to
separate.
This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a
process of long and careful consideration.
We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further.
Hope to see you soon.

I wouldn't bother notifying anyone. People would get informed on an as-needed basis, or they'd be close enough to me/us that a formal message is unnecessary.

Maybe one or both have other 'prospects' and they wanted to, unobtrusively, send out the 'all clear' signal to their special someone:)

I couldn't care less about how someone else notifies their friends and family of a divorce, celebrity status or otherwise. Why is it anyone's business? It's insignificant, that's what it is.

If I got an announcement like that via email, my first inclination would be to suspect that the sender's email got hacked.

I'm not insinuating that you should care, I'm simply remarking that things that would have never been email topics 10 years ago are now. Honestly I put this on the same level as text message breakups.

My cousin and her husband recently decided to split up. They were married for 10+ years and have a child (son) together. She decided to share the news via email as well.

Given the size of our family I don't blame her. Personally, I'd rather hear it from her via email than hear it through the grapevine 6 months later.

Also, I wonder if Tipper is going to get half of the environment in the divorce.

The big question is who gets the internets.

Yeah, but she'll get the prize money.
