Israeli forces have attacked a flotilla of aid-carrying ships aiming to break the country's siege on Gaza.

Up to 16 people were killed and dozens injured when troops stormed the Freedom Flotilla early on Monday, the Israeli Army Radio said.

The flotilla was attacked in international waters, 65km off the Gaza coast.

So. Obama could and should condemn this attack. Or he could make some lame excuses on behalf of Israel.

I for one, am fascinated to see which it is.

You do realize that Obama is rare for a US president in that he actually criticizes Isreal? Hannity etc. bash him for it all the time.

WHY THE FUCK DO ALL OF YOU PEOPLE YOU TALK RADIO LISTENERS / FREEPERS TRY TO TURN EVERYTHING TO AN OBAMA ISSUE?

Christ, in this case, in the first real sentence, none the less.

Obama aside, WTF is Israel thinking? They aren't helping themselves, and they aren't helping our interests in that region.

Sorry, it's late and I read 'OMG Fartbama is a ***' in your OP. My bad. If this turns out to be as bad as it looks now, he'll probably say father-like things coming down on Israel, and do nothing. I'm not bashing him, but that's about the worst thing we ever do with Israel when they start acting like pricks.

Reminder that this ship was the Turkish one, you know, the one belonging to Israel's only ally, you know, the one with elderly and infant passengers, you know, the one constantly checked for arms and all because it's a government ship.

Edit: and of COURSE Obama won't do anything, he got treated like Hitler 2 when he said 'hey, maybe stop bulldozing arab homes to build your own?' We've just smiled and nodded when Israel has blown up red cross and all before, we'll do it again.

When Israel stops being a siege state surrounded on all sides by enemy's i'll expect them to stop acting like this, until then, forget it.

Is it right that they do it? No

Is it natural human reaction? FUck yes.

It's not really a siege state, is it? It's not under blockade. Egypt and Jordan aren't considered enemies anymore. It's not under attack from all sides, or indeed any side. Really, Israel's doing fine.

I usually am a critic in general of the policy Israel has in regards to its neighbors, but this is just silly. I by no means condone the act, but it was obviously a publicity stunt from the start. Groups already have the means to make aid donations to Palestinians through other, less dangerous means. As for the attacks, a few of the stories I read mentioned the boarding Israelis being attacked with weapons such as clubs and bottles. Until I see footage of the boarding (of which I am actively sorting through the typical ME propaganda at the moment), I will reserve my outrage.

The Israeli blockade doesn't let anywhere near the aid required through.

Before I jump into this one, is there better than "reasonable assurance" that the ships were thoroughly inspected as to the cargo they were carrying?

If there was an trusted international inspection team aboard every ship, contents list sent to Israel and all was okey-dokey and Israel did this anyway then....booo Israel.

If the Israeli government had no assurances of the ship's manifests then........common sense move to avoid more arms reaching their destination.

You may not like me for my opinion but, Israel does not do things without good reason. They also do not take **** from others. Who inspected the ships and how do Aid ships carry armed people?

Unlinked article is unlinked.

But thanks for the quote, I'm sure it tells the entire story.

According to Israel, the soldiers were attacked when they boarded the vessel.
CNN wrote:
(CNN) -- Three Israeli choppers with 15 soldiers aboard and several commando boats were involved in a skirmish with activists on a flotilla seeking to defy an Israeli blockade and deliver aid to Gaza, a senior military official said Monday on condition of anonymity.

Ten people were killed in the resulting violence early Monday as Israeli troops attempted to stop the flotilla.

An Israeli commando said upon descending into a boat with ropes, he was immediately attacked by a group of people.

"They beat us up with metal sticks and knives," he said. "There was live fire at some point against us... They were shooting at us from below deck."

Some of the soldiers were tossed from the top deck to a lower deck by the activists, and jumped in the water to save themselves, he said.

Activists grabbed soldiers and tried to hold them hostage, stripping them of their helmets and equipment, he said. About 30 activists, all speaking Arabic, carried out the attack, he said.

Activists have said the Israeli soldiers opened fire on unarmed civilians. Neither account could be independently verified by CNN.

Don't ask me which is the true account or if it's in the middle or what.

This specific ship was the Turk ship, as in it came from Turkey and in multiple points was checked over for weapons, this was NOT the big pro-Palestine boat or anything else coming from some other place, this was literally a ship coming from Turkey to support the charity and help carry things, it's just a basic matter of fact that they were checked.

Also claiming they had 'illegal' items is silly, because thanks to the blockade here are some horrible tools of terror:

*Paper for text books

*Water Purification Kits

*Most parts of a field-medic kit that is constantly being requested by the few doctors left in the area

*Construction tools to rebuild homes, most of which have been destroyed since 2008's invasion

*HAM style radios to allow people to contact the outside world

That's why they didn't hand them over, they kinda wanted everything to get there.

Israel offered to let the cargo pass through if the flotilla stopped first at an Israeli port for inspection.

Didn't they want their textbook paper or water filtration kits inspected?

Yeah, 2 sides to every story etc.. I know it's really easy to pounce on Israel but let's try not to lose our heads like a Palestinian hostage.

You do know it's not an 'inspection' right? It's confiscation.

Well, that's one excuse for undergoing what was essentially a military operation using their civilian status as a shield.

The first reports seem conflicting, depending on the source. Nothing new there ofcourse, I doubt the Israeli will suddenly state that they did it deliberately and unprovoked or the pro-Palestinian activists suddenly admit that they were the ones who provoked them.

It might be in between, it might not, without actual footage, unedited and clear, nothing will ever be fully clear I suppose. Heck, even then some will not believe it anyway.

On the other hand, I wonder how many wounded the Israeli military have? They were the ones being attacked first according to them, there's no clear indication who got killed or wounded, or I haven't seen it anyway. If no military were seriously injured, those Arab attackers sure were lousy shots.

Well, I'm sure the Israeli have pretty good body armor, so I'd think that the only injuries were from those who were "tossed from the top deck to a lower deck".

And I wouldn't call Israel a besieged state, what with all the aid we send *them*.

They're reporting seven injured. No idea on the extent of their injuries.

According to Israeli sources, they started off using riot suppression gear/techniques until they heard gunshots coming from the lower decks at which point they switched to live rounds.

Add all the usual caveats about sides of story, etc etc.

I had heard yesterday that Israel never intended to let the ships through, so this comes as no surprise, really.

Paskil, the Huffinton Post has this video that Israel released showing the troops being attacked as they boarded. I didn't link the YouTube URL because you have to "sign in or sign up" to view it. Personally, I have no idea if that really shows what it says it shows. It's difficult to tell what's going on, and there's no way to know what happened before this video was shot.

The whole thing is a mess. I admittedly don't understand a whole lot about the Israel vs Palestine thing, but I don't understand why we continually support Israel.

ETA: Joph, the story I just read is saying 9 have been killed so far.
