America Speaking Out - for the lulz!Follow

#1 May 27 2010 at 11:14 AM Rating: Excellent
So, the GOP decided that they wanted to rebrand themselves for 2010. What better what to do this than with a multimedia blitz?

So they made a shiny new website, www.americaspeakingout.com, and launched it with much fanfare.

The idea is that you can post any suggestion you want, and good suggestions get voted up or down. Anyone can sign up, and share their ideas.

Bad idea, GOP.

Before long, DKOS and Huffpost folks began spamming it with suggestions like "repeal DADT" and "extend unemployment benefits." This was followed by 4chan, Fark, and the SA crew discovering it and digging in with gems like this:

ASO.com wrote:
The Second Amendment is clear: All Americans should be permitted, even encouraged, to own and carry their own concealed tactical nuclear weapons at all times.

ASO.com wrote:
If invading two countries is making us safer right now, then invading one more will make us ever safer, right? How about Columbia? They've got narco-terrorists, I hear. Terrorists make me cry at night. I wish Uncle Sam would come and hold me tight and keep me safe from the terrorists. That's the government's job, you know--keeping Americans safe. That's why our sidewalks are made out of pillows.

ASO.com wrote:
Where all the white women at?

I can't actually get on the website any more; it caused my computer to have a Blue Screen of Death. But don't worry, the comedy comments are already making their rounds throughout the Tubes.

In the meantime, the Dems responded with a website of their own:
www.americaspokeout.com - which needs no further elaboration once you click it.

1. The site is slow as hell.
2. Ignorance seems to be the dominant trait shared among its users.

Spamming it with garbage is pretty lame. Hard to be upset over liberals contributing liberal agenda type things though unless they meant "Only the parts of America we agree with speak out". "Repeal DADT" is just as valid a suggestion as "Lower capital gains taxes".

On the contrary: thats hilarious. How many news forums have conservatives ruined with their horseshit posts. They post about Obama even if the story has nothing to do with politics.

Two wrongs don't make a right, etc...

The opportunity existed (and may still) for both sides of the equation to voice their concerns equally in a forum designed with a conservative slant. Intelligent responses might prove beneficial. Idiotic ones certainly will not.

I think it's appropriate. Many of America's hundreds of millions of voices are incredibly inane.

But what about in an argument such as in politics where 'right' and 'wrong' are subject to interpretation even more so than most other discourse? If this site allows for the frothing mouth-breathers of both sides and no side, and upside, Northside and Dennis; then the GOP hasa pretty fair shot of getting a real grasp on what Americans want and not what the seem to want. All this spouting "For the People! For the People!" they're doing had better god damned be for ALL of the people.

I'm not sure you understood my point. Ridiculous yet honest opinions from both sides would be sufficient. Stupid, pointless heckling for the mere sake of pissing on someone's effort is not at all useful.

You're retarded. You must be. It has a pretty fair shot of getting a grasp on nothing more than the contribution of the people who can be disruptive in anonymity.

Aside from that it should probably be noted that conservatives don't actually give a flying f'uck what the people want. They'll get what we think they need.

Edit: Nevermind. I realized had to read that from the perspective of a conservative. It still made absolutely no sense, but was at least comprehensible.

You mean just like the Tea Party and "Town Hall" styled rallies? Anonymity exists in the form of mobs and mob mentality, too. Not as much, but there's still a fair degree there. A site like this gets both sides to yell their rhetoric at the other in any way they choose.

To discount a public forum simply because there's a chance or, or there are hecklers is to discount the idea of a public forum itself.

Edit: Improper grammar.

No. In the era of public safety cameras, cell phone video, YouTube, twitter, etc., there is no such thing as anonymity in public. The site was intended for something the internet doesn't do well: civility. Add to that the fact that it was open to anyone and the people from the taint of the internet who get off on disturbing the intended purpose of anything and you get something that is no help to anyone.

But to discount that public forum because it becomes overrun with people whose sole intent is to overrun and make a mockery of it does nothing more than acknowledge the inevitable.

too petty and childish to use the internet?

is that possible?

Anyone who has ventured out into the Internet farther than Facebook, Google, and YouPorn knows that no one is too petty and childish to use it.

Since that comment was petty and childish, I'm going to assume that you're a liberal from now on.
