For a divorce, attorneys' fees should never ever ever be 6 figures. Ever. Almost half of the assets are going to pay for the attorneys' fees now. It's so true that when a divorcing couples see red, the attorneys see green.

Like it or not. To be without a lawyer is being a total fool when you are having problems. And there are more problems that arrise in your lifetime that require one then you will know. Likewise, having a lawyer is also a fast way to become poorer. To top it off? Lawyers can be scam artists and they are pretty much completely free to operate without any fear of the law.

So my parents were separated for many years because they thought getting a proper divorce was too expensive. Why did they finally do it? Well, their third child had just graduated from law school and did it for them.
