I'll bet y'all drive autoamtics, too. I mean, if you can't co-ordinate your left foot with your right hand, there's a lot you shouldn't be doing.

I drive an automatic because its almost impossible to roll a spliff and drive safely in a manual imo.
If a joint can be rolled with one hand, a manual tranny shouldn't be much of an impedance. I've perfected eating an ice cream cone while driving my 5-speed.

I learned to drive on a manual, and took my driving test in one. When I was younger, I used to joke that driving a manual was "driving", while driving an automatic was just "steering". Yes. I mocked those who thought driving a manual was too hard and whatnot. Um... But as I got older I realized that the value of being able to hold your head up high as a true driver just wasn't worth the pain in the freaking legs that driving a stick often entailed. The fun of an orchestrated ballet of feet and hands when expertly guiding a manual transmission into forward motion on a steep hill at a stoplight wears off after awhile.

I do on occasion enjoy hopping in a manual and playing the gears. But that's a lot more fun when you're young and carefree and don't drive the same commute every single day...

One thing I've kind of wondered at times... do Europeans who drive cars with manual transmissions learn to use their left hand?

I just wonder how painful it is for them to slam their hands into the door when they drive an American manual.

I believe the UK is the only country in Western Europe (and maybe even Eastern) to drive on the left, so for most Europeans I assume they buy vehicles with the driver seat on the left side like in the U.S. In the UK I guess they shift lefty. As a left handed person I can say it's not the slightest bit awkward for me to use my right hand for gears.

Ya, but you are a left handed person living in a right handed world. Right handed people aren't normally used to having to live in a world where they are forced to use their other hand.

My sister actually learned to shift with her left hand since our dad let her shift gears from the passenger seat while he was driving. She had to re-learn once she was driving so as not to be shifting across herself.

I don't think he was saying we aren't used to it and it's sooo hard, as much as he was saying that you've learned to use your other hand, where most people haven't so it would be more awkward to switch. It's not about feeling sorry for anyone.

Oh lighten up Xsarus, twas a joke. However, the same reasoning applies to those who are right handed and must shift with their left. They learned to shift with their left from the beginning. I throw left handed, but I shoot bows right handed; I learned to do it that way, and it never bothered me while learning.

My parents remind me constantly of how their best friends' son was killed in a crash caused by him texting while driving. Gotta admit I still do it sometimes, but I try not to and I've cut down a ton.

I thought those tests I saw on TV were retarded...try to drive through a slalom of traffic cones while texting. No one is going to be able to do that, not even me! If I *need* to do something on my 'Berry (I don't text) I can wait until there's a straight stretch of road with little or no traffic. If not...then it's not that important.

I'm not skilled enough at texting on my 2abc phone to do so while distracted by anything, let alone driving. I either pull over, or 99% of the time, not bother texting back.

None of you have anything on this guy.

Personally it was bad enough when people were just talking on the phone while driving. Yeah, yeah, yeah... some people can do it and some people can't. The problem is that everyone things they are one of the people that can do it. With texting and driving, things have approached the absurd.

Holy crap, that's scary, and not because of the motorcyclist.

Please don't drive and Text. Not for the faint of heart. This is a good one to show teens.
AMS Team, as we are learning and appreciating communication devices like cell phones, blackberries, etc., and the simplicity and quickness of “texting”, please keep in mind how dangerous it is to drive and text at the same time….looking out the windshield and on a little screen while using your thumbs to send and read messages while using a hand to steer…our hands and eyes cannot be doing two very different things at the same time.

I am attaching a link to a texting and driving video made in Europe to warn of the dangers of texting while driving. Let me warn you in advance that it is very disturbing. In addition, if any of you want to share it with others, please tell them to review it before they show it to kids of driving age and if the kids do not drive yet, I would probably not show it to them.

In the workplace M-F and during our personal time and on weekends…we must be smart, don’t text and drive please, for your sake and those of others.

Wow. That.... just wow.

Does anyone know where to find the full 30 minute film, instead of just the 4 minute teaser?

Do we really need this cautionary tale? Isn't dying while texting while driving natural selection at work? Isn't getting killed by someone driving while texting just an unfortunate effect of natural selection?

Seems most folks here just want to mock this, which I think is sad, considering the seriousness of the message.

Still for those interested in getting the full 30-minute film (maybe you have kids and want to get through to them about distracted driving), here is how to do so:

Contact the Gwent Police Department Corporate Communications division at: Corporate.Communications@gwent.pnn.police.uk

They will be putting it on sale soon (Price TBD) and if you e-mail them about it now, they will put you on a waiting list and contact you when it is available for sale.

Seems like some folks around here are under the impression that this is the appropriate outlet for a sermon against something common among 16 year olds, which I think is sad, considering the lack of a sh;t most of us give about what you think of our maturity level.

Still because you're a humourless cnut if you're interested in a little amusement throughout your day, hang out a bit and read some content before you add your Pollyanna rainbow farts to the acerbic collective. We won't even charge you for the privilege.
