At a ceremony honoring military veterans, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal (D), who is running for U.S. Senate, recalled his own service, the New York Times reports.

Said Blumenthal: "We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam. And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it -- Afghanistan or Iraq -- we owe our military men and women unconditional support."

"There was one problem: Mr. Blumenthal... never served in Vietnam. He obtained at least five military deferments from 1965 to 1970 and took repeated steps that enabled him to avoid going to war, according to records."

The ceremony was in 2008 and I guess the guy's defense is that he "misspoke" and that he has a record of thousands of times giving an accurate portrayal of his record (or lack thereof). I don't really buy it and am boggled that someone would make such a stupid and easily disproven lie for really no gain. Just say "Support the troops!" and leave off the "I learned as a soldier..." stuff. Not to excuse the remarks but at least maybe 20 years ago or something you could get away with it. These days, pawing through military records looking for dirt is a national past time. And 2008 was well after the "Let's try to smear Senator Kerry's records!" movement so it's not as though it was new.

Lordie, what an idiot.

Abstinence only is for school children. When they get older the safest bet is to put it in the butt.

Erm... yeah.

You know, not that anyone expects you to read words and understand what they mean, but he made the remarks in 2008. During the crest of the Democratic wave. I'm sure he was scared as the ********

I feel like the headline editors could have had more fun with this.

"Blumenthal scuttles his own campaign in 'Swiftboat moment.'"

"Blumenthal doesn't have the hat; he never got one!"

"Blumenthal's Vietnam service proves to be just as substantial as his charisma."

Jophed,

Actually he's had the liberal media carry his water for him;

Quote:
In at least eight newspaper articles published in Connecticut from 2003 to 2009, he is described as having served in Vietnam.

So your argument is that he was scared all those times? Interesting.

By the way, he was exposed by the New York Times. Standard bearer of your "liberal media" boogeymen.

Jophed,

I have an argument?

No arguing about it; the democrat lied about being in the military and the liberal media covered up his lie. Even the NY Times article refrains from calling him a liar merely saying his words differ from his history.

So apparently Blumenthal did serve during the Vietnam War time period as a reservist in the Marines (I didn't know this when I wrote the OP) and his excuse for his statements was that he misspoke or chose words poorly which implied that he served IN Vietnam rather than DURING, as it were.

Ironically, his best defense may have come from his opponents:
Associated Press wrote:
At a news conference Tuesday where he surrounded himself with veterans, Blumenthal said he meant to say he served "during" Vietnam instead of "in" Vietnam. He said the statements were "totally unintentional" errors that occurred only a few times out of hundreds of public appearances.
[...]
The crisis erupted when The New York Times reported that Blumenthal had repeatedly distorted his military service. The story included quotations and a video of Blumenthal saying at a 2008 event that he had "served in Vietnam." The newspaper also said Blumenthal intimated more than once that he was a victim of the abuse heaped on Vietnam veterans upon their return home.

A longer version of the video posted by a Republican opponent also shows Blumenthal at the beginning of his speech correctly characterizing his service by saying that he "served in the military, during the Vietnam era."

I haven't been chasing the story or the videos but this does seem to be a potential turn-around.

Only to Democrat apologists.

The only reason the NY Times is bringing this up now is to protect him against this being used as a October surprise. He lied. You know he lied, just own up to it then we can move on.

The NYT apparently did some shoddy reporting on this.

Surprised it wasn't a right wing news source that caught it first.

Meh.
Politicians forever live in the gray areas of life. You tell the same story over and over to people at cocktail parties, fund raisers, and receiving lines you eventually embellish it, add some colorful details for the entertainment of your listeners, and slowly it becomes part of the dashing persona and past you used to wish you had. Only now you do because that gilded fish story of when you were bravely facing the enemy in a combat zone has taken on a life of its' own, and hey, nobody has ever twigged onto it, so what's the harm? Thus it slowly morphs into one of those little white lies that you tell knowing deep down that it isn't the truth, but maybe it's close enough if for no other reason than you so badly want it to be true that that makes it kinda sorta almost real.

Besides the admiration or adoration from others is *so* appealing.

This kind of lie is tailor made for a politician's psychological makeup and why so many of them get caught in telling these fibs. They've simply lived in life's gray areas for so long that they don't really recognise a white lie for being the lie that it is.

Why?

Perhaps idiotic liberals think a liberal site putting something like this out there now instead of October is a surprise.

So you think they should have sat on the story until late October?
