NYC's Times Square Evacuated in Bomb Scare
SUV Was on Fire in Tourist Area; Bomb Squad Called In

By RICHARD ESPOSITO

The incident in New York City's Times Square that began with a suspicious vehicle appears to have developed into a real threat from a fire bomb, according to one official account.

Part of New York City's Times Square area was evacuated Saturday, May 1, after a suspicious vehicle was found there on fire.
(Getty Images)All reports indicate the vehicle contained gasoline, propane and possibly gun powder. Incindiary devices are not explosive devices, but are lethal.

The incident began around 6:35 p.m., when the Fire Department of New York responded to a car fire in the vicinity of 45th Street and 7th Avenue, and because of suspicious characteristics of the vehicle, the police department ESU was notified.

The car was identified as a Land Rover with a Connecticut or unmatched license plate. The car is still unsafe to perform appropriate diagnostics on. It is being confirmed as an actual incendiary device.

Bomb techs from the FBI New York office were on scene with the NYPD Bomb Squad to aid in the investigation.

After the fire in the vehicle was reported at around 6:35 p.m., police closed off an area in Times Square near 44th Street and 7th Avenue.

A short time later, the immediate area around 45th and Broadway was evacuated, including some theaters on 45th Street, while in at least one theater audience members inside were not allowed to leave.

Other theaters delayed opening as Broadway from 44th to 47th Streets was closed.

In at least one theater, audience members were not allowed to leave while the investigation continued.

Shortly after 7:00 o'clock, witnesses told WABC-TV they heard an explosion, then saw smoke coming from the car.

"It was a boom and a puff of smoke," one man said.

"I saw people running, turning tables," Paula Delarrosa said.

The NYPD quickly blocked off 44th through 48th Street and sent in the robot from the bomb squad to check for explosives.

A live Web cam feed at 46th Street and Broadway showed the streets had been cleared of pedestrians. A line of police cars blocked one street and officers paced on a sidewalk.

The NYPD Bomb Squad was called and blew out the vehicles windows in order to investigate. The noise could be heard for a couple of blocks from the scene.

"The police evacuated us," Ruth, a visitor from Philadelphia, said.

"We can't get to our show," said another tourist.

Times Square remained closed as police continued to investigate late Saturday night.

Kids these days, glued to their Wiis, don't even know how to make an exploding car anymore.

I'm glad it more or less fizzled. I don't understand why the person did it in Times Square, it's not exactly a huge political statement. The Disney Store? Naked Cowboy?

Because in the minds of the misunderstood, disenfranchised, Great Satan oppressed, and hopelessly angry, New York is at the center of all what is evil in the universe. It is there where you will find capitalism running rampant, intolerably free speech being spoken, and filthy infidels of all colors, genders, and political persuasions crawling about in a never ending quest to deny Muslims their rightful place at the head of all humanity.

I thought that that was obvious?

Substitute "Los Angeles" or "San Francisco" for "New York", and "Republicans" for "Muslims", and you'd have something straight out of the mouth of a liberal.

Conclusion: You're a socialist.

Strange MO.

If we set aside ************* insane loner hearing dog voices" for a minute, the profile here is driven by the inconsistencies of the reported evidence.

The apparent complete lack of technical expertise around the device tells us one of two things;

1. This wasn't the intended target at all and this was less an assembled device than it was a gathering of items to build such a thing where one of them ignited due to the high ambient temperature. This was the warmest it'd been in NYC in quite a while, it's not impossible one of the heat sensitive items just became unstable.

2. This is the work of a very small group amazingly technically inept people. The reported items display an almost childlike inventory of "things that might explode" seemingly ordered in no particular fashion. Fireworks, propane tanks, gasoline, then the clocks and batteries, maybe the strangest part. It's what you'd expect to see in the shot of "car bomb" from A Uwe Boll movie. I'm almost surprised there wasn't a big iron ball with a fuse sticking out of it. It leads me to believe this almost certainly can't be related to any sort of even marginally organized or motivated "cause".

Then there's the vehicle:

The vehicle prep is where the inconsistency gets interesting:

Reports are that the VIN numbers were removed, and the plates swapped. The lack of reporting of new leads might mean that most other tracking information was also removed from the vehicle. How does this mesh with the armature how bomb?

Incompetent perps bought a stolen vehicle from competent vehicle thief?

Just so strange.

I'd be looking for a couple of youngish white men, mid twenties at the oldest, possibly involved in a self escalating relationship that led to this, something neither of them was particularly motivated towards except as way demonstrate to the other how "tough"/"serious"/"etc." they were.

It'll be interesting to learn more.

Times Square is seen as a symbol of American culture. It may not be deeply political, but assaulting it sends a statement either way.

There was a **** load of cops roaming Times Square today. I'm sure there's typically a lot there in the first place, but they had them gathered in one spot at 42nd and there must have been 30-40 of them gathered.

My money's on this.

Almost identical to an event in London a year or two back by a couple of doctors. Same type of location, same ordenance, same fUck-up.

Wannabe Al-Q'aeda heroes. I suspect it was a case of "You wanna be part of our gang? Blow up somehing and you're in." A few googles later and a trip to a hardware store and voila - inkompytunt terrists.

Even an wholly incompetent person or group of people with an intent to create and detonate an explosive device should have the marginal foresight to do a couple quick Google searches prior to constructing a device. This makes me lean toward option 1, although I won't rule out #2, as underestimating another's stupidity is always a foolish move to make.

Now, re-evaluating the situation, this time erring on the side of competence, because of the inconsistencies in the car acquisition, assuming it was done by the same operative, it could be a test of the local law enforcements response capabilities, and their method of operating or perhaps a flocking decoy. (Flocking decoy being a method of bringing intended recipients in range of a second (more competently designed) device, or as cover for another unrelated enterprise that values enforcement presence being not at the other locale.)

Video shows a white-ish middle aged male, stopping a couple of blocks away after parking the car and taking off an outer garment, perhaps to effect a quick disquise. Lol, of course, it doesn't help that you put on your nose-and-glasses ala Groucho Marx in front of a video camera.

It looks like it the offices of Viacom, who put out South Park, may have been the intended target.

Which is weird, as when I saw this I thought this could be South Park retaliation by unorganized, basement-dwelling Muslim extremist sympathizers.

I'm sure we've not heard the end of this. We'll find that while all of NYC's finest had their eyes turned towards a smoking vehicle, the commies snuck out the back door with the countries secretest secrets.

It sure is good times.

It's almost as fun as dispensing medical advice on WebMD and having it being treated as fact.

Especially when you prescribe trepanning for a migraine problem.

Decapitation is met with skepticism and never followed.

My trepanning advice was followed twice.
