Um... So I can't run in some new mode that's designed (I assume) to take advantage of some latest-greatest hardware features? Am I going to miss anything?

Yeah, you missed the point that your claim that a 9800 GTX+ can run any PC game with maxxed out settings was a retarded thing to say. It's a perfectly capable little card. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, "more than capable of playing any PC game at a high resolution and with all the software features you want turned on" as you claimed.

If you want pre-built you should go to a site like http://www.ibuypower.com/ or http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/

Out of curiosity, I went to ibuypower.com and "built" the same system I have now. It didn't include keyboard, mouse or monitor since I had those and I got most of it accurate except for the case which required some guessing on my part and I think their power supply is a cheaper model than what I have.

Total was $735 which is probably close to what mine would have cost if I had to buy the copy of Windows retail (they charge $101 for Win7 Professional, I got mine from a relative who works for Microsoft). Maybe just a little bit more expensive but I don't think I really saved a significant amount of money by building my own.

Edit: I didn't figure shipping when I wrote that. Looks like they'd want another $65 for it. So I figure I probably saved $75-$100 then building it myself when you add their shipping costs in there.

Hundred bucks? Totally worth it to not have to fuss with it myself.

I actually had fun building mine. I'd do it more often if I had the money to just buy and build a lot of computers. Smiley: grin

The buy route, there are some plusses and some potential pitfalls. Ibuypower and cyberpower are both decent companies. They are lower priced than some, but have the occasional quality control issue. They rose to prominance after Dell bought Alienware and HP bought Vodoo PC. Falcon northwest, Widow PC, etc are still your leading Super high dolar build shops.

The one really good thing about The ibuypower and cyberpower is they use standard components. You buy a typical dell or HP workstation, and half the crap is nonstandard Fan headers, BTX form factor motherboards, anemic power supplies. Makes future upgradeing a pain. you can usually take an ibuypower case and upgrade it fairly easily. I tend to not like their case selection because they go for the flashy over the top flame painted ones, and their lower end builds use very tiny cases.

Some of the other pluses to the buy route:
A single warranty point - If the computer breaks, they fix for the term of the warranty
A known good installation of the OS - Some people have difficulty provisioning their computer loads and ensuring they get things like antivirus and patches installed.

Some of the minuses:
A retail video card might have a lifetime warrenty. That same card in an ibuypower or equivilent PC will have at most a 3 year warranty.
Prebuilt OS's from manufacturers often have useless crap pre installed that you don't want.
Spending that $100 you could have used to buy a better CPU.

The support from Ibuypower and Cyberpower tends to be hit or miss. Then again so is Dell and HP unless you have a gold support line.

I think there is value to having built your own computer though too. Makes rebuilding it later much cheaper than buying a new one.

Yes, it is. It easily takes at least 5x the amount of time. And then if it's your first time doing this, it will definitely take a much, much longer time.

That's going from the 9800 GTX+ to a 260 GTX or a Radeon HD 5830. I won't pretend to know how good of a jump that is.

A hundred bucks will alternately take you from an i3-530 to a i5-750 Quad core. Again, I won't try to judge. I'm also assuming the MB will still be acceptable.

In my case, it just saved me a hundred bucks 'cause Flea wasn't going to let me go 17% over budget.

This is where you made your mistake. You asked her what the budget was.

I didn't tell my wife what my laptop cost until I took it out of the box and licked it so I couldn't send it back (like a muffin).

9800 to ATX, etc is a pretty good jump.

I dunno, I guess it's more that I'm not hurting for money, I'm not otherwise very extravagant, and my time is worth more to me than $50/hr. If I enjoyed it at all I'd discount that, but I don't. It's a chore, and an annoying one that I'm okay with paying someone else to do.

Also: can we please define the damn chip replacement argument? People are talking about at least three different things, and the cross talk is starting to aggravate me.

Which is harder to do?
Replacing the chip is intrinsically difficult and fiddly :0 (0.0%)
No, fumblethumbs, it's dead simple to replace the chip BUT it is difficult to get to it to do that :5 (45.5%)
You're both crazy! I replace chips for fun. Usually on Friday nights *sob* :1 (9.1%)
The video card is the easiest piece to replace, hands down, no argument :5 (45.5%)
Total:11

You forgot the most important option of all:

  • None of you mother f'uckers is making any sense at all at this point so shut the f'uck up about it and move on.

  • Of course, you may have omitted that on purpose because its, like, not nice, and stuff.
