The fact that Varus needs to cherry-pick a line from 2010 and try to connect it to another cherry-picked line from nearly a decade ago (in which Obama is talking about the Civil Rights Movement) pretty much says it all.

I agree. A consistent message is one that should be given greater weight than one he just came up with during the run up to his presidency or in his time in office.

Well done, little buddy.

Yeah, uh, if they have the power and if their opinions make sense. I don't see Obama repealing smoking bans even though he's a smoker. It would certainly make his life easier, but hey, he's not idiotic.

This must be the part where you're trolling because I know you're not seriously calling two unrelated statements made over a ten year period a "consistent message".

MDenham isn't a liberal. This has to have come up before - not everyone who disagrees with you is a liberal.

Dude, let it go. I'm farther to the right than Pat Buchannon on most things and Varus calls me a liberal. He's floating in space without a tether and has lost touch with the grab bar.

Right. What he didn't say was, "I do think at a certain point you've made enough money, and I'm going to, by executive order, put salary caps on all wall street employees."

It's not gonna happen.

When you are a public official, your opinions influence public policy. It's kinda relevant to know that the president of the US does not agree with the "American Way" when it comes to wealth and property.

Are you just playing here? Are you actually surprised that the statements of a politician might just be taken seriously? If Bush had said something like "I know it's the American Way to allow people to succeed regardless of their race or gender, but I think that there's a point at which women and blacks have succeeded enough", do you think maybe there might have been a bit of uproar?

Really? They already pushed for a limited version.

Since I keep asking this, and everyone keeps ignoring it: What do you think was the purpose of putting that line in his speech? If it's not supposed to be taken as any sort of policy position, nor something which his administration is considering or would even like to see enforced in some way, then why on earth say it?

Why?

#91gbaji, Posted: Apr 30 2010 at 8:24 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) That's not the point. The point is that there exists an active perception among those in the Obama administration that executive pay is too high and it would be a good thing to reduce it. How they go about imposing that is irrelevant. What does matter is the fact that this is clearly more than just an idle opinion, and is in fact something that the president and many on his staff would like to see become reality.

Yeah... much like Varus, you seem to have missed completely what the President actually said. It was quite obvious that no policy will be put into play by his opinion.

Do you honestly not see the difference between a president singling out women and blacks, and a president who simply said "you" in the general sense...? Of course there would've been an uproar to the statement you presented. But not because it would be assumed that policy would be put into effect.

I know you're not this moronic. Though you test that knowledge daily, lately.

To answer Varus's original question: I personally think the point that an executive is making too much money is reached whereupon a CEO's salary is greater than the combined earnings of everyone below him. At that point, the CEO has too much money.

Thus, there is no dollar figure we can give you for what point someone has "too much money" - just a floating theoretical value. But, for example, if a CEO is pulling in five mil a year, and everyone below him in the company for the next 100 levels or so doesn't make a combined 5 mil, he's making too much money.

That isn't even me being a liberal; that'd be my argument if I was on the board of such a business and reviewing the executive compensation scheme of the company. What makes one MBA that much better than all the other MBAs that report to him?

A CEO who makes, and I'm just throwing out a random figure here, 10 million in compensation before being terminated because his company is failing is not earning the money. He's playing the system. There's a difference between the two, not that I'd expect you to get that.

A CEO who makes that kind of money got a corporate board to give him a contract worth that much. I still fail to see the problem. If a winger signs a contract for millions of dollars then fails to score a single goal in a season the team still has to honor the contract. The company wanted that CEO, the team wanted that winger. They had to decide how much they were willing to pay and the talent had to decide how much, and under what terms, they were willing to accept. No one put a gun to the head of the board members and made them offer the huge contracts. If the CEO shows up to work every day and fulfills the terms of his contract, he's absolutely earning his money.
