Obama,

Quote:
"Now, what we’re doing, I want to be clear, we’re not trying to push financial reform because we begrudge success that's fairly earned. I mean, I do think at a certain point you've made enough money."

I think "fairly earned" is the pertinent phrase here. "Fairly earned" as opposed to "******** over middle-class homeowners and breaking the economy to profit on losses".

Varus, are you actually saying that there's no such thing as "enough money"? Really?

Even if he is, it's simply the inarticulate expression of a philosophical position. The idea of limiting the upper range of remuneration is ridiculous, especially as being currently applied. The President isn't suggesting that we limit the amount a motion picture should gross, even if it licks donkey nuts (Titanic). The President isn't suggesting the actors in motion pictures should be paid less. The President isn't suggesting that a class action product liability lawyer's salary should be capped. He's not suggesting it because there's no traction in it politically. All the talk of Republicans playing on people's fears yet here we have the same politics taking away just as much liberty and not a single leftist is complaining.

Why not?

Moebius,

Would you rather I write a book on it like Gbaji? You seemed to understand the point I was making. Why deprive the others of the chance for figuring it out on their own?

Yes he is you tool. The president said (now let me bold for effect) I do think at a certain point you've made enough money.".

If he thinks at some point you've made enough money what in the h*ll makes you think he wouldn't approve a salary cap for EVERY profession?

Maybe you liberals should review exactly what a facist govn is. The ***** blamed their economy on the jews...Obama's blaming it on greed, both attempts at the complete govn takeover of the private sector.

So at what point do you tell someone to stop working they've made enough money, and what happens to all their employees when they shut down the business because they've hit that mark?

For one thing, I haven't seen anything besides the one quote (can't watch the video so I don't know if it provides more context).

For another thing, the "liberty" hammer is really more of a GOP talking point. Denounce the liberals for hating liberty over and over but, when it's a goal the GOP supports... that's waaayyyy different. Discussions of why something is bad that don't go deeper than "OMGLIBERTY" are tiresome and typically nothing but partisan rhetoric.

Aside from sarcastic remarks to the effect of "So what are you going to do with that, anyway? It's not like you get to take it with you when you die", I'm not about to tell people to stop working.

As far as what happens to all their employees: well, I don't know, you tell me what happens when someone makes the personal decision that they've reached that point and decide to shut down their business.

You seem to be advocating now that, even if someone's made more money than they'll ever use, they're obligated to continue providing jobs for their employees regardless of whether or not they want to continue running that business.

The title of the article you linked: Obama To Wall Street: "I Do Think At A Certain Point You've Made Enough Money"

I want to point out that it doesn't say "Obama to Hollywood:" or "Obama to Trial Lawyers:" it says "Obama to Wall Street:"

It's because for most liberals the concept of liberty is an inconvenience. It gets in the way of redistribution of wealth. Thomas Jefferson didn't mention talking points in the Declaration of Independence.

Hey, the White House website comes through for me...
Quote:
Now, what we’re doing -- I want to be clear, we’re not trying to push financial reform because we begrudge success that's fairly earned. I mean, I do think at a certain point you’ve made enough money. (Laughter.) But part of the American way is you can just keep on making it if you’re providing a good product or you’re providing a good service. We don't want people to stop fulfilling the core responsibilities of the financial system to help grow the economy.

I’ve said this before. I’ve said this on Wall Street just last week. I believe in the power of the free market. And I believe in a strong financial system. And when it’s working right, financial institutions, they help make possible families buying homes, and businesses growing, and new ideas taking flight. An entrepreneur may have a great idea, but he may need to borrow some money to make it happen. It would be hard for a lot of us to buy a house -- our first house, at least, if we weren’t able to take out a mortgage.

Oh, yeah... I should be terrified at my lost liberties when the president makes a joke and then says that the American system is that you can make as much money as you want.

SHOCK SHOCK HORROR!!!

When the US first implemented income taxes, the top bracket was 90%. Any tax suggested these days pales in comparison to the draconian taxes which existed at that point. Oh, and by the way, the economy was great back then. Worked fine. We've steadily lowered that rate through history and there is no correlation to growth from lower taxes.

You'll have to define talking point for me some time. Or, at the very least, what you think it means.

While I don't want to put words in Debalic's mouth, I took it to mean Subprime lending.

Why do you believe people who have proven an inability or lack of intent to pay their bills shouldn't be able to buy a house?

I don't think it was a joke, but it was purely anecdotal.
