Quote:
Polish President Lech Kaczynski was killed early Saturday along with his wife, several top military officials, and the head of the national bank when their plane crashed at a western Russian airport, officials said.
"There are no survivors," said Sergey Antufyev, the governor of Smolensk, where the plane was trying to land when it crashed. Russian emergency officials said 97 people died. Kaczynski was 60....They included Aleksander Szczyglo, the head of the National Security Office; Jerzy Szmajdzinski, the deputy parliament speaker; Andrzej Kremer, the deputy foreign minister; and Gen. Franciszek Gagor, the army chief of staff, according to the party. The party also said that Slawomir Skrzypek, head of the National Bank of Poland, was killed.
"The entire top military brass, including the chief of defense and all the services, were on the plane," said Tomas Valasek, of the Center for European Reform.
"If that is true, then you're looking at a situation, in effect, of the decapitation of the military services."

If the Polish government has been crippled, who will surrender when the parking brake on some German kid's car fails and it rolls across the border?

What?

I'm honestly not sure what you think you're making a joke about here.

A small two-seater Cessna 152 plane crashed into a cemetery early this afternoon in central Poland. Polish search and rescue workers have recovered 300 bodies so far and expect that number to climb as digging continues into the evening.

That's the only relevant joke I've got.

How many Polacks does it take to land an airplane?

None, apparently.

My condolences to Joph and any family he may have back in the homeland.

This is what happens when you try to fly up on a plane using Reverse Polish Notation.

I don't get why so many officials were in one plane. A 20+ year old Soviet era plane with a terrible track record.

I guess that's Eastern Europe for you.

I don't know about the track record, but 20 years isn't that old in airplane years. The U.S. Air Force One 747s were built in 1990.

They were going to a memorial service for the 20,000 polish officers and cadets murdered by the soviet's in and around the Katyn Forest in 1940. They were executed under the orders of Stalin who didn't want any middle or upper class Catholics around for the post war period.
