Apparently Stevens has decided to retire at the end of this term allowing Obama to appoint another justice.

It should be interesting to see how this plays out after the state of the union where Obama slid in some criticism of the supreme court.

The Story

Liberal Conspiracy

TILT
Obama will nominate some center-left judge, the GOP will insist that s/he is a radical socialist, there'll be Senate hearings where they grill him or her over topics such as abortion, state's rights and gun control, the nominee will defer saying they can't comment on potential upcoming cases, the hearings will end, the GOP will threaten a filibuster, Gbaji will insist that his supporting this filibuster is nothing at all like when he ******* about how wrong it was for the Democrats to threaten to filibuster Roberts/Alito, the vote will come up and the justice will be confirmed and the ideological balance of the court will remain unchanged.

Now you know how it'll play out.

I've heard rumors about Goodwin Liu being groomed for a possible appointee. While he might be center-left in the scope of national politics, relative to the current makeup of the supreme court that makes him fairly far to the left. GOP crocodile tears would at least be slightly more justified for Liu than in the case of Alito.
