Heard the name, but I probably couldn't tell you it was her if I heard her song. I also don't know if I could find her if she were lost in a sea of drag-queens.

Lady Gaga, like Britney Spears, has found most of her music a permanent residence of strip clubs and other less sophisticated party venues. As a frequent patron of such places, I'm very familiar with her music and I do have to say one thing.

It's catchy.

Just because you've heard of someone doesn't mean that they've influenced you.

Also, I can't take any list seriously that claims it's going to include the most influential people in the world and then proceeds to make half of the available candidates crappy pop artists and two bit actors from the US.

Tell you what, you let me know the minute crappy pop artists and 2 bit actors from the U.S. stop being influential in the world and I' let you know you should start your Mandarin lessons. It's the way of the world. Everyone wants to be like us whether they admit it or not.

Hold me up and give me air while agree publicly with Moe, but I got down to the end of the thread and Moe said pretty much what I was going to say.

I think the set of people who imbibe pop culture is much larger than the set of people who imbibe serious news and information culture. So even if the two sets of people overlap, someone who sends a big ripple through the pop sphere is very culturally influential, even if you think they ought not to be in comparison with somebody more "serious", "heavyweight" or "admirable".

Not directly maybe. But if they've influenced the culture you live in, then indirectly (insidiously?) their influence will seep back into your life, even if you don't know where the originating imagery, iconography or conceptuality comes from.

KSR has way more influence than 70% of those on that list, and yet approximately zero people know who they are or what they did.

LOL that Obama is only number 16 right now.

I very highly doubt that. They want to watch your TV programs like they want to buy cheap electronics from China. That's about as far as it goes. Most of the world really doesn't give a crap about the US or how you live your lives, it doesn't even cross their minds, whether you admit it or not.

A lot of the world looks at the way you live your lives and goes "wtf? I can't kill a goat in my own city backyard? How am I supposed to make [insertrandomholiday] dinner now?"

Which is why so much of our crap pop culture is exported to the rest of the world. You're welcome.

By the way, the reason people can buy cheap electronics from China - the U.S. consumer. You're welcome.

The reason people can buy cheap clothes from Malaysia - the U.S. consumer. You're welcome.

The reason people get Indians on the phone for customer service - the U.S. business community. Our bad.

The explosion of the U.S. economy & technological innovation in the United States in the second half of the 20th century coupled with the fact that we basically got rid of all of the really insidious threats to world peace, are the reasons that your lives outside this country are so peachy keen. You're welcome and f'uck off.

It's nice to enjoy the ability to worry about something so trivial because your big brother is the most powerful nation on the planet, isn't it? You're welcome.

No. Your crap pop culture is exported because corporate giants want to spread their rancid seed all over the planet. Nobody comes knocking on America's door asking for a cup of culture. A lot of your "pop culture" comes from Britain.

Your technological innovation stalled a couple of decades ago, and your economy is in the crapper. The rest of the world is doing just fine, it does not depend on the US for happiness as you seem to think. You're just not THAT important.

I don't hate America, I really don't, you do a lot of good things. I just hate the self centered attitude I see from a lot (not all, maybe just more aggressive than other countries) of Americans. You're culture is one of exclusion, dominance, and fear that breeds a lot of entitled twats.

Nobody holds a gun to their heads to make them buy it, yet they do anyway. Hmm.

A lot of us come from Britain. We make it better an export it. And people buy it. Of their own free will. Hmm.

/snicker Sure, if you mean that Canada is so much like the U.S.

And a manufacturing infrastructure built to make goods for the U.S. consumer, the best debt spender on the planet. You're still welcome, you ingrate.

Doing just fine buying our technology, trying desperately to sell us their crap and hoping like hell we don't decide to cut off our foreign aid to them or stop funding the U.N. You're welcome.

Considering world peace doesn't actually exist, I'm not sure it can be threatened in the first place. One might more accurately say the USA removed all the especially problematic barriers to world peace. Not entirely accurately, of course, because its not entirely true.

You know, I have a friend that went to the US for a visit not long ago.

They said, "It's just like Canada, but dirtier, poorer, and a little darker."
