Gunn High School Pwns WestboroFollow

#1 Apr 01 2010 at 12:24 AM Rating: Excellent
This has been making the rounds on ye olde intertubes, but it bears repeating.

Westboro Baptist Church picked the wrong Bay Area high school to picket.

It's a well known saying that you can't out-protest people in San Francisco, but this counter-protest was approved from the top down. In the video, the principal explains that they held an assembly to warn the kids what was coming, and the decision was made to involve as many people as possible. Parents are holding signs that say "Leave my kids alone." Friends were invited from other schools.

If there is a God, really, he needs to drop a meteor directly onto the Westboro group's heads. I'd believe forever if that actually happened.

Edit: 2:30 AM, typos happen, sue me.

If it wasn't a hole, I'd totally go live in Billings.

If you can find a house there, the Rims in Billings are a rather nice place. Breathtaking view every day, etc.

But yeah. I wasn't impressed with Billings either and actually kinda feel sorry for my extended family for being stuck there. The smarter ones quickly move out, whether it's to the Army like my father, or to Red Lodge like my cousin Trent.

Reminds me of something right out of the 60s.

Still pretty awesome though.

The OP link made me cry with happiness. And yes, I haven't seen a protest that looked like that since the hippies in the 70s either. Such bright, hopeful, loving slogans, colours everywhere, people rocking together in each other's arms, singing such loving, sappy songs about being there for each other. What fabulous irony the WBC inspired this.

I wonder how the teachers got warnings ahead of time that this was coming? Kudos to the teachers for telling teh students to respond peacefully, if at all, and kudos to the students for organising this.

Also, bodhisattva's student stand raising money and their "thank you" cards to WBC made me laugh with schadenfreaud glee.
