Chose Your Own Adventure: Hotel Manager QuestFollow

#1 Mar 27 2010 at 12:53 PM Rating: Excellent
You're the night manager at a luxury hotel in a major city at 3am, having just returned from letting a guest back into their room whom for some reason left it clad only in his boxer shorts, when the phone rings and one of your guests calls down with a complaint. Apparently, someone in your hotel is smoking "something" in another room on their floor in your non smoking hotel & the smoke/smell is so overpowering it's making their eyes water. You apologize profusely & head up to investigate.

The elevator doors open on their floor & you can all ready smell it. Literally, half of the entire floor smells like pot. It's almost as if, recently, someone was smoking a joint in the hallway. Since the smell is everywhere, it makes it impossible to deduce the source. You walk the hall searching for a clue. At 3am, not a whole lot is going on but one room is being loud enough to warrant further investigation, under the guise of "noise complaint."

You knock on the door.

There's immediate shushing from inside when you identify yourself as "security", but the door is opened after only two knocks. The door swings open wide enough for you to see through to the other side. You observe a grinning white man in a green hooded sweatshirt with squinty, glossy eyes at the door. Behind him is a large black man, whom quickly walks out of view from your vantage point in the doorway. Seated, behind where he once stood and through the copious amounts of smoke, lingering in the room, is a man of unknown decent (he was brown skinned, i know not what kind) with crutches. There may be others in the room, but they are out of your view & don't speak to you. They are all in their late teans/early 20s.

You inform them of the complaint, the fact that they'd be charged an $175 smoking fee (Per the registration card signed at check in!), & if their were further complaints they'd be charged in full & evicted.

They offer little protest & no one at the time disputes what you witnessed.

3 hours later a 4th person, another white fellow whom the night previously you just so happened to inform where to buy rolling papers when asked while at the same time warning him of the smoking fee should he be caught smoking in the rooms, comes down & disputes what you witnessed accompanied by the man on crutches. You agree to disagree on what was witnessed & refuse to remove the smoking charge. He asks for your managers name, the corporate offices, & the GM & Regional Manager's information. You comply.

After work, you tell your girlfriend about your night. About an hour afterward, she heads to work at the same job. While there, she witnesses them talking to your manager. They deny smoking in the room &, near the end of the conversation, decide race may have been a factor in your accusations.

Unbeknown to them, they do so in front of your girlfriend, who's of full Japanese decent.

Your manager, during the conversation with this 4th man & the guy on crutches, was actually thinking about being nice & not charging them until they played the race card. After talking with your girlfriend, he says that he'll talk to you again in the morning & decide.

You effectively have them by the balls, having great influence on whether or not they pay this $175 smoking fee. You could be nice & do so, as $175 is a lot of money for you & most likely, a lot for these 4 20 somethings in town for a gaming expo (PAX East is in town). Yet in their "quest" to get out of an $175 smoking fee, they've called you a liar & a racist in front of your girlfriend.

What Do you Do?
Charge them. Karma's a *****.:36 (90.0%)
Offer them mercy. They're just kids.:0 (0.0%)
Other. :4 (10.0%)
Total:40

Explain "Other" in detail, as "others" could weigh heavier on the final decision than the first two options, provided there will be lulz.

Charge them. The fact that they didn't initially dispute the allegations coupled with their slimy attempts to weasel their way out of it are obnoxious

Letting them off the hook would effectively send the message that they can get away with **** by playing the race card.

The fourth person probably came back and said "Dude, they are selling limited edition <insert random object here> we can't spent this money on a smoking charge, we have to buy it!".

Had they acted maturely, accepted their fault and asked for pardon I would say let them be and not charge them. But denying facts and accusing you of rascism in my opinion fully warrants hitting them with fine and being fiendishly satisfied about it.

Kill them and steal their earthy possessions, then go on a killing spree downtown. When apprehended, blame it all on video games and the marijuana fumes you inhaled while in their room.

This. You physically saw the smoke in the room. Charge those ********. Having to deal with the complaints from whiny non-smokers about smelling smoke in a room is bad enough, but what they smoked is even harder to get rid of.

Charge them. I can't think of a single reason why not. Even if they had been cool about it, I'd lean towards charging them. That they decided to be ***** about isn't why I say to charge them but it sure doesn't change my opinion for the better.

Charge them for that, and any extra fees you can tack on. Playing the race card is going too far if they're dumb enough to smoke pot in a hotel room.

Wait till they go to the convention and then let yourself into their room and relieve them of their pot. Duh.

Charge them! Have zero regrets! They knew the rules and violated them. To top it off they played the race card that was not an issue at all. Going to your boss and complaining is the final straw in my book. I doubt that they will learn from this lesson but their pocket book might.

Charge them, all the way.

Don't to the crime if you can't do the time (or pay the fine).

Hold on. Did they pay cash or credit card? If cash, they might just relieve the hotel of $175 worth of stuff.

$175 worth of scratchy towels and mini bottles of shampoo are hard to walk out of a hotel with unless you brought extra empty luggage.

Charge them, then light them on fire and charge them again!

Seriously, I don't want some ******** smokey resedue fouling up a hotel room I might stay in. If it's a smokeing room and I get stuck with it due to my own poor planning, shame on me. If it's a non smokeing room and some ******* guest makes me stay in a smokey room instead, if I know who that person is, it should be legal for me to kill them. Messily, prefferably with a chainsaw.

Would you really leave it back at the room and go to the convention empty handed?

Since they were smoking pot, inform them that the fee will be tripled.

One-third goes to pay the actual fee, one-third into your pocket, and one-third to your manager.

Minifridges, coffee makers, hair dryers, artwork, etc... You have no idea what I've seen missing from my hotels.

Also, lacking the ability to see these options, you're welcome in one of my hotels anyday.

They never showed up, so the charge remains. I was gonna give them a chance too, but apparently they had better things to do than attempt to get out of the charge.

Oh well.

I don't get it. It's easier to smuggle a mini-fridge or a 2'x3' framed watercolor out of a hotel than a suitcase full of towels?

Well, my wife and I did smuggle a large (dog-size) pet carrier full of cats into a hotel room for a weekend...
