Blockbuster's annual report warns that it is uncertain that Blockbuster can continue as a company and warns of closing around 20% of its remaining physical outlets.
When I watch movies at home, I usually...
Use Blockbuster rental stores:2 (2.9%)
Use Blockbuster's online service:1 (1.4%)
Use another physical rental location (other store, Redbox):8 (11.6%)
Use Netflix (streaming or mailed disc):27 (39.1%)
Use another legal online/download/mail service (inc. PPV channels):8 (11.6%)
Use an illegal online service (inc. torrents):12 (17.4%)
Purchase physical media (via online or brick & mortar store):11 (15.9%)
Total:69

I was the worst for stacking up late fees on video rentals. I <3 Netflix.

So I voted for buy physical media - which is true because most movies watched in my home are kids movies which get watched over and over again. However, we do rent (via download) various movies. But we have actually never paid for this only done so via free trials - but in the future I expect we'll pay.

Netflix is awesome. But I do wish that there were more good* movies on the Watch it Now list.

*And by good, I obviously mean movies I want to watch when I want to watch them.

I think I still have a blockbuster card somewhere. Haven't used it in probably 15 years or so. Honestly, as the volume of cable channels have increased, the desire to spend money to buy a film to watch has pretty much dropped to zero. If I'm in the mood to watch a film, I'll either watch something I own, or I can find something interesting one one of the zillion and a half channels available. And if that's not enough, I can search for shows and DVR them. And if that's not enough, there might be something on the InDemand stuff that comes free with all the channels I'm already paying for. And if that's not enough, there's also the pay InDemand stuff (newer releases basically).

The point at which I'd pay money for yet another option has just never arrived. Not for a long time...

I've been doing Netflix but I hold on to those for so long that it might be worth it to just go brick-and-mortar again, if any if them stay open.

Haven't used BB since they refused to carry uncensored R movies.

I forgot all about the OnDemand (and other PPV) channels though I suppose they fit neatly into the "other download" category.

I usually watch them illegally (mostly TV shows, not video; Megavideo is GREAT for most TV, but the 1 hour a day limit sucks for movies). If I really like a movie, I'll go out and buy it. If I just want to watch a movie NOW, I'll borrow it from a friend. Recently I used a Redbox for the first time to watch Ponyo; it was useful, but the selection of movies can be kinda limited.

I'm on the one movie at a time plan for $9.00/month. Even if I don't swap it out more than once in the month (which is sometimes the case) it's saving me not having to deal with a store and it's deadlines.

Also, my husband has been downloading and watching insta-movies from net-flix occasionally on my computer as it has hi-def. I just can't get into the movie groove sitting in front of my machine.

We generally watch whatever movie is on cable, but buy DVDs for movies that Ray just feels like he has to have. He has cut down on the amount of movies he buys since I insist that the movies he buys have to be ones that he'd watch more than twice.

We use Netflix and supplement it with RedBox. RedBox is the only non-adult rental store that will come to theour 'hood. Netflix is going to need more streaming movies to keep our business if the Post Office ever cuts days.

Redbox and OnDemand from Comcast. Blockbuster is done for, especially with talk of late fees returning.

Really interesting move on WB's part here. To me, this just further pisses off the people who don't use Blockbuster.

I loved NetFlix but they started charging me for lost movies. After charging me and suspending my account I found the movies but never bothered restarting. I acquired Brazil, Stardust, Hombre, some other older Paul Newman movie and a few more in this fashion.

Nowadays we (meaning my wife) just buys discs from stores.

I have a Blockbuster card, but we use it to rent games, rarely movies. If we want to rent a movie we use On Demand or iTunes, hooked up to the TV.

If you have a half dozen or more "lost" movies sitting in your kitchen junk drawer, I have a hard time faulting Netflix for charging you.

I'd like to get a streaming service, but I don't think there is on in Canada yet. Zip.ca was supposed to start one up, but they don't seem to have done that yet.

Apparently netflix will be taking it's streaming service international in the second half of 2010, so hopefully It'll be available here.

I've been waiting for this to happen to blockbuster for over a decade. I hate that place. over priced, bad policies and the one's ive been too had horrible service. Other stores nearby were always significantly better. Sadly, those places also bit the dust.

But yea, netflix ftw.

I don't blame Netflix for anything. Initially they were awesome about the occasional missing disc but when we moved and lost three at once that's when they cracked down on us, which I completely agree with. I realize that I am less than reliable when it comes to rented items which is why I didn't press the issue.

Their selection of foreign movies seems to be considerably better on average than the Hollywood fare they offer. That might not appeal to you, but its worth mentioning. I too wish they'd offer more and better for instant viewing.

The best thing about Netflix is that they offer so many movies that I'd never otherwise get a chance to see(foreign, independent, documentaries).

By the time I rent the new release (~$7) and get snacks at BB plus the time it takes to return it I find that it's just easier to buy the movie. My office is above a mall so I can drop in whenever I need to.

Maybe if BB opened a location in the mall, that would make things way more convenient.

Buchanan.

I'm surprised that that many people (and yes, 8 is "that many") actually purchase DVDs as their primary means of seeing movies at home.
