I've always needed more than 12 inches to grow potatoes. I usually build their end of the box 2-4 inches down deeper than the box so that I have the extra room. I do the same with carrots but I don't think they need the extra room, I just do it out of habit.

I should get a tumbler. Turning a stationary compost bin with a broken pitchfork is a pain in the ***.

I'm in the situation of not having enough dirt in my yard with the new retaining wall, so i'm going to need to aquire additional dirt anyways. The stuff that is in the retaining wall already is pretty good, better than the clay that makes up the rest of the yard so i should be able to grow a decent bunch of potatoes. Nordic golds, maybe a few reds. The watermellon is more a "I've tried to grow one since I was a kid and they always get killed by something before i can get a chance to harvest them. my sister tripped over the vine with the only real fruit I ever managed to grow before it was bigger than a lime. So its more a single time "wanna grow one" thing than any plans to grow them every year.

I can't find any of the stupid red and black bug. a week ago i had dozens of them. now, none. I did see my frog again though!

Irrigation is going in sometime in the next three weekends, weather dependant. 4 seperate loops, one dedicated for the garden and the two blueberry bushes, one for the front yard flower bushes, one for the side yard area next to the driveway, and one for the grass (that may end up being two in the end. My primary goal is to not flood the house. Despite evidence to the contrary I'm actually not bad at plumbing usually, and I have electrical right where the controll panel will end up at in the garage, so it shouldn't be a problematic project. Never used a power trencher thingy before though, so that could be entertaining. I seem to have almost no rocks in my soil though, so I expect it to go fairly well. Just need to route around the area where the future back deck and storage shed will be, and make sure i don't put a line where a fence post will need to go.

I may add a cherry tree someday. but I hear you need two of them in proximaty for fruit. Apples would also do well, but for the whole allergic to them thing. Love apples though... Plums do well around here, so thats a possibility. The grapes on the side of the house will be on the same irrigation circuit as the garden too.
